Gregory College House

Any comments?

Comments about what? The community, the rooms, the buildings facilities? They’re all pretty great. I applied for the high rises, but I’m actually quite glad I didn’t get them: supposedly, they’re not the greatest for a freshman looking for a hall/floor community People always say the Quad is the best for freshmen, but I think Gregory is just as good. Floor 3 and 4 of Van Pelt Manor are all/mostly freshmen, so you’re bound to make some good friends from the start. Also, you get your own room and only have to share a bathroom with your roommates. How cool is that? There’s a DVD library, piano lounge, film lounge, etc. See [Gregory College House](http://gregory.house.upenn.edu/facilities.aspx) for more info on the house facilities.

I’ve also heard that living in the Quad freshmen year doesn’t get you guaranteed housing as a sophomore and beyond. This is great if you want to live off campus after freshman year, but if you don’t, it can be a big problem. Gregory’s got a high retention rate for upperclassmen, and everyone I know who applied to stay here got a room, no problem.

The only qualm I had is the distance to classes, especially DRL. But it’s no worse then the walk from the high rises: you just have to plan to leave the dorm about ten/fifteen minutes before class. Plus, as a tradeoff, we’re closer to the shops on 40th Street and the Fresh Grocer. :)

yeah, I’m going to submit my housing app soon… Gregory is definitely one of my top choices, but I’m just really worried about it being too far from everything… I heard it has a really cozy, tight-knit community and I’m interested in the MLP… It seems all the good stuff is in Valt Pelt… How about the Class of 1925 house? Are they pretty much the same? Also, is Greg. far from econ classes? the Cohen building?

If you don’t like walking, it might be a problem. You can always invest in a bike, like I’m doing next year. If you have classes in Huntsman Hall (I don’t know if econ is held there or not), Gregory is not at all far, but if you have some in DRL (which you probably will) it’s a bit of a walk through campus (about fifteen/twenty minutes). It helps prevent from the freshmen-15, in any case, and as I mentioned, it’s an almost nonexistent walk to a multitude of stores. Also, the Penn buses that run after 5:00 PM on weekdays stop right outside of Gregory, so you can just hop on a bus or shuttle from any classes you have after that time. You can probably make it to the Cohen building within ten minutes.

Class of '25 is pretty cool, too. I haven’t been into any of the rooms but I think they’re just about the same as the ones in Van Pelt Manor. Class of '25 has a fantastic movie-viewing area downstairs, as well as beautiful greenhouse space. Brunch is held every Sunday morning in the Greenhouse, which also sports a kitchen. Their basement is actually more spacious then Van Pelt Manor, and has a lot of study rooms, the library, and a pool table. I’ve heard MLP is nifty, and I believe it’s a for-credit program, meaning that you can get half a credit per semester for attending all of the events. Van Pelt Manor has a similar program, the Film Culture Program, that awards credit for watching/discussing movies with the rest of the students in the group. Gregory also holds a ton of house events that are open for both buildings to enjoy. Barbeque/karaoke night is a fun even that comes to mind, along with the Six Flags trip, the ski trip, the rafting trip, and the IKEA trip.

Check out the website for some pictures of the facilities and to get a good idea of what your room would look like. There’s also a YouTube channel by Penn that showcases the rooms in each College House. Good luck on your housing application! :)

You should know that there is a stereotype of Gregory kids being weird.

I know some non-weird ones though.

Seriously? Never heard of such a thing! I gotta say, though, that if you judged people by what college house they lived in… that in itself would be pretty strange.

Anyone have anything to add to this? I’m leaning towards going into the MLP for Arabic, but, from the search function, it sounds like Gregory has a bad rap for having anti-social people.

Why choose Gregory when you can live in Harrison?

Also, you don’t have to be in Gregory to participate in any of the Modern Language Programs, unless you want to receive credit for them (which means you need to show up for the vast majority of the nights and participate, etc.). I hung out with the Casa Hispanica last semester.

Gregory is alright (and was my second choice as a freshman) but…seriously. Go for Harrison (Freshman Experience).
