Grinnell decisions mailed

I know that Grinnell has a reputation for being very liberal, so I wonder how they take affirmative action into account? I also mentioned Che Guevara in my essay and talked about being a racial outcast in my small town and how it lets me see things differently than the people around me, whose mind sets are buried in Southern traditions.

If it's an academic institution, and the people there are generally considered intelligent, and they have money then they're going to lean liberal. They take affirmative action into account the same way any little rich school takes affirmative action into account--they'd like more minorities, they try and get more minorities, most of their applicants are not minorities. As for the Che Guevara "outcast" thing, in my experience most people under the age of 30 who look up to Che Guevara are obnoxious idiots who have no idea what it is he really stood for, and if I read an essay about someone being an outcast their entire life and never managing to integrate (unless there was some understandable barrier) I'd look at them as a problem, not as some possible future luminary of societal thought. That's just my opinion, though, and I'm sure there are exceptions to the Cue Guevara idiot rule, and hopefully you're one of them.

Trying to quantify all these little things is just a waste of energy. I'd recommend everyone take some Nyquil and sleep for a couple of days until they get a response instead of worrying. A little worrying is good, a little anxiety helps people get things done, but I have no idea how some of the people who've talked about practically hacking the Grinnell site will manage to deal with the stress of finals if they can't deal with the stress of waiting a few more days for admission decisions. Uncertainty isn't fun, but it's also not something to hyperventilate over.

Waitlisted

not that i'm surprised... now i have been waitlisted by 5.... yes count 'em FIVE... schools- Grinnell, Wesleyan, CMC, Carleton, and GWU (which i still believe i should have gotten into but whatever)

rejected at haverford, but accepted into Macalester and BC so i should be okay. still waiting to hear from pomona and skidmore

i also figure that if i go on the waitlist at the four LACs odds are i should be accepted into ONE of them... possibly???

Waitlisted! And I had that @grinnell.edu on my account, so it means nothing.

Amazingly enough, I'm still really happy. The only thing I'm worried about is now I'll be waitlisted/rejected at Vassar- but my Vassar app was a LOT better than Grinnell's and I interviewed with Vassar, so I'm not sure about my chances.

Congrats on Grinnell, everyone!

omg i got waitlisted. and everyone told me grinnell was a match....

i found the waitlist stats for fall 2006, but does anyone have them for fall 2007?

i am seriously thinking about not even going to college this year and just applying ED for grinnell next year. would that be a horrible idea? i already have one year of community college done and i am considered a sophomore at UW, but i don't know how much credit grinnell would accept from that.

I'm thinking about calling Grinnell and asking if they would accept me into the class of 2013, because I called today and talked to my officer and he said that if I had applied early decision or any other year I would have been admitted, but this year there were so many qualified applicants. I took the waitlist spot and told him it was my first choice, so now I guess I just have to keep them updated and pray that I get in.

RJ - will they do that? that is what i am thinking of doing too.

edit, i mean admit you into the class of 2013. you wouldn't need to reapply next year?

I'm guessing they probably had to waitlist a lot more this year, because if they get too high a yield, they'll be swamped with "extra" students. A school this small, that wants to keep classes really small, could easily get oversubscribed.

ilk07

You already have some great choices. A good friend of my son's is at BC and another at Mac.

andreaaaaa

Do you have some other choices? Another student here was assured by her GC that Grinnell was a safety for her and she was waitlisted. And her stats, ECs, everything about her was amazing.

well, i applied to eight schools, but i have only gotten into my safeties so far. and basically, the only schools i wanted to go to were grinnell and carleton.

grinnell *- waitlist.
**carleton *
- reject.
*whitman *- haven't heard back from yet. but i don't want to go.
**lewis and clark
- accepted. but i don't know how grad schools see lewis and clark, and i am concerned about going into debt for a school where i might not get my money back, in terms of future grad school/jobs.
macalester *- waitlist.
**reed *
- haven't heard back from yet. but i know i don't want to go. i didn't like what i saw at my visit. i don't think i would fit in.
**university of washington
- accepted, but i don't want to stay in state and i got a fairly bad financial aid package.
western washington university - accepted, but i don't want to stay in state.

Lewis & Clark looked really good to us. You have a month to look into that some more. If you are interested in International Relations or related areas, it could be a great choice. Of course, you do need to weigh the cost if you're taking on debt.

Andrea, I'm curious what you didn't like about Whitman and what attracts you to Lewis and Clark. For me it's sort of the other way around, so another perspective would be interesting.

Andreaaa

Forgive me for answering for you, but I got the sense you wanted to leave your state and that might drive the L&C rather than the Whitman.

In response to your question Andreaaaaaaa, I would be asking to be offered deferred admission to the class of 2013, so I wouldn't apply again. I don't really want to wait a year for college though; hopefully I will get off the waitlist. If not, I might go to a state school for free freshmen year and then transfer.

thanks for your responses, guys.

yeah, i did enjoy my visit there. but there are a couple of things i am concerned about - the boy/girl ratio, and also the quality of education and what would happen if i were to graduate from there. i am not sure if i want to go to grad school yet, but i have a feeling that a lewis and clark degree might not be worth what i would have to pay for it. i already got 8,000 in merit aid, but i still have to wait for my main financial aid package. i feel like i would be able to get into a good grad school, or get a good job if i went to grinnell or carleton, and therefore any debt i got into would be worth it, but maybe not so much with lewis and clark.

oh, actually, whitman is probably higher on my list than lewis and clark, but i haven't heard back from whitman yet. sorry to confuse you. i also got 8,000 dollars a year from lewis and clark, which helps a lot. but even if i did not get merit aid at whitman, i would probably go there over lewis and clark. i would say whitman is my third choice while lewis and clark is my fourth.

it is true that i want to leave my state, but actually whitman is farther away from where i live (seattle) than lewis and clark. plus the weather in the two locations is quite different - lewis and clark would actually be more similar to where i live than whitman. basically i wanted to go to the midwest....and i really wanted to leave my general area and not attend schools where people from my school are going....UW and western. UW and western seem like "high school part two" for me, and that really isn't what i want....i want a new experience and a new environment. but i don't think anyone else from my school is going to either whitman or lewis and clark, so that should be okay.

okay, i see what you mean. if they allow that, would you let me know?

I will keep you updated, Andreaaa. I wish you the best of luck in all your collegiate endeavors.

Hey andreaaaaaa...
I have been rejected from Grinnell and some other colleges...oh well..I am international and asked for full aid. So I am thinking of taking a year off from studies and trying again next year...probably with better Sat scores and essays. I got full aid in an university in my country(Bangladesh), but I dont feel like studying there coz the quality of education is perhaps not that good. Besides I am too much in love with colleges like Grinnell & Vassar. If you guys have any advice for me..you are most welcome!

Just to let anyone who is interested know, I'm probably going to Northwestern, so that will open up a spot on the waitlist. I hope one of you CC'ers get it! Grinnell is a great school. =)

haha yeah....NO ONE GO TO GRINNELL THIS YEAR, pleeeeeeaaasseee.

I guess we are the same kinda ppl...lol

So I hear Grinnell is infested with a flesh eating bacteria, and that the graduates are really dumb and stuff. So basically no one should take a spot at Grinnell because it is sooo horrible

(Just kidding, but seriously, don't take a spot)
