Grinnell RD 2023

S accepted via the link sent by email. We have not received an acceptance packet in the mail yet. We live in the Chicago area.

BillW13 Did you check the need based scholarship information yet? We also received merit award but S got a need based scholarship package too.

Wondering if any parents here are going to accepted students weekend April 7-8?

@Momto2girls we are. My D has visited twice (once last summer) and an overnight in the fall with a member of her athletic team, but she wants to go one more time now that it’s really decision time. Are you going?

@crknwk2000 my D, like yours, has visited twice and wants to go again for decision making. I’m on the fence about whether to go. I have a hotel reservation (we’re in Minneapolis, so we’ll drive down), but I am wondering if there’s enough for parents to do?

My husband went with S19 to the Grinnell Admitted Student days. There was a ton to do. Look at the schedule. There were break outs with career planning, a student panel, FA, and lots more. In the evening, there was a little party before dinner to mingle with the president and faculty.

@homerdog
We had a blast as parents at the accepted student event. They evening reception was very nice and we attended all sorts of other events. We enjoyed walking around the cute town (great shoe store by the way) and hit the Prairie Canary for a great meal. We stayed at Hotel Grinnell which was really interesting old converted school. My daughter chose another school but we loved Grinnell.

@Momto2girls , S19 did sign up at my request and I am looking at flights from Maine. Ouch!

He did a solo visit in the Fall that was too short (in retrospect), staying over of Sunday and leaving campus at 11:30 on a Monday morning. It really was not a great visit (class he attended was out-of-the-ordinary), I do not want to make that mistake again, but am wondering if flying in on Sunday morning will make for too long of a day to really soak it in, From what I have read, I think it would be a great place for him.

@windingway we have family in Maine – my ex-husband is from Maine. It is expensive to fly into Maine so I bet it is pricey to fly from Maine to Des Moines!

My D was accepted with $25,000 merit scholarship. 36 ACT, 1550 SAT, 3.98 unweighted GPA, National Merit honorable mention, double legacy (both her father and I attended).

D was accepted with Founder’s Scholarship (merit). Does anyone know if this scholarship is a commitment to be given every year? Presume so, but of course will check with Grinnell to verify… We’re planning on coming to the accepted students weekend April 7-8. We’ll be flying in from Idaho. Looking forward to seeing Grinnell for the first time and perhaps meeting those of you attending as well.

@rmsdad yes. She will receive that award each year. When you receive the hard copy of her FA package, you will see that. Congrats!!

Thanks @homerdog.

@windingway - Thought the same thing. I am looking at flying in Saturday and leaving Tuesday. Might as well not shortchange the visit ang give the best chance for my D to have a positive experience.

Edit - you said too long of a day. I read it as too short of a day. Activities start early enough on Sunday that we’d miss a lot by flying in on Sunday. Perhaps all semantics. It would be a long travel day and a short tour day for us.

@rmsdad In past years, Grinnell merit aid continued each semester as long as the student maintains a 2.75 cumulative GPA.

Just when you think it’s all settled… Wesleyan accepted and offered $11.6k more. Based on everything I’ve read, I expected Grinnell to be equal to any other offer. Guess Wesleyan really wanted my D  Wesleyan didn’t break scholarships down to merit vs need so I don’t know how they are allocating. In the end, I can’t justify that degree of difference to go to Grinnell. So to Wesleyan it is, unless one of the Ivies (or one from the many waitlists) comes calling with as good an offer.

I spent all last night diving into all Grinnell has to offer and appreciating what a great school it is. Congrats to all of you who got in - it’s a fantastic choice. We’ll be freeing up one of the waitlist spots.

Just got back from our Accepted Students’ Visit at Grinnell. It was a really informative and fun time for DS. He particularly liked hanging out with the other prospectives. He was so excited to be around so many smart, interesting and quirky individuals. Well done, Grinnell!

@windingway glad your son had a great time. Grinnell is such an amazing place!!

When do people usually hear from the waitlist? Is it a week or so after may 1st? Thanks for the clarification!

There’s no fixed time. Sometime after May 1 would be the first wave, IF there’s a first wave, because then they know who’s committed initially, and whether they are left with additional spots. If some of those kids get off OTHER wait lists down the line, there might be further adjustments. Or not.

I have not heard anything.
