Hi, I just submitted my application to Grinnell last night. Does anyone have admissions statistics specific for RD? Since they have two rounds of ED, I imagine it's pretty low. Also, do they interview RD applicants?

In 2010-2011, 1091 out of 2545 regular decision students were accepted, at a rate of 42.8%. In early decision, 137 out of 300 students were accepted, for a rate of 45.7%. Not a significant difference. Good Luck!

Wow that’s surprisingly high! I thought the overall admit rate was around 30?
And thanks!

I think that might have more to do with the fact that the applicant pool is a bit more self-selected than in other schools.

Average test scores and GPA are a better way of predicting admissions than sheer admission percentages. 42.8% of students in the United States would NOT be able to gain admission to Grinnell. 42.8% of students who ultimately decide that its worth applying to Grinnell are admitted. There’s a big difference. Admission rates are determined by nothing more than the number of applicants, the predicted yield, and the number of seats there are to fill.

The middle 50% at Grinnell is 28-32 ACT and 1220-1470 SAT CR+M. If you fall within this range, your odds of admission are fair. If you’re above or below, your odds of admission increase or decrease.

Thanks for putting that in context. So you’re saying not as many qualified people would apply to an LAC in the middle of no where as opposed to an Amherst or Swarthmore which are in urban locations/near a metropolis? That makes sense. I’m actually somewhat attracted to that aspect of Grinnell. My main reason for considering LACs though is class size, student/professor and research opportunities that are not as available to undergrads at large universities, particularly since I want to go to law/grad school.
My GPA is a 3.7 (but with an upward trend), I have a 33 ACT score, average ECs, and am Hispanic. I consider Grinnell a slight reach because of my GPA. Is that how you guys would assess my chances as well?

^Your GPA isn’t that bad, and your ACT is very good. Being above the 75th percentile at Grinnell is very impressive. I’d say you have a fairly good chance.

What’s your class rank? That would put your 3.7 in perspective. If you’re in the top 10%, you’re probably set. If not, I still wouldn’t call it a reach.

Per Grinnell’s Common Data Set, Asians make up about 6% of the student body (96/1655). I’d estimate that Indians are about 1/3, Chinese 1/3 and other Asian about 1/3. So that works out to about 32 Indians. Not a lot - they are URMs in the midwest.

And UM, I think you look good.

I’m in the top 10% of my class, albeit barely (14/153 I believe). I will have a 3.9+ this semester with two APs and two community college courses. Thanks for all the advice/chancing everyone, I really hope I get in!

This year the percent accepted is predicted by the admissions department to be under 30 percent. Could be an interesting year. Best of Luck!
