Don't get me started on Prep. The book's garbage.

On a different note, saying that Groton's academics are anything short of intense is ridiculous. I'm a sophomore in college now (Groton class of '07), and Groton was comparable if not more difficult than the work I'm doing now. If you want a rigorous academic experience, in a small community-oriented environment, Groton's the place for you.

NEprepgoer---based on your experiences at groton, do you actually think the book prep is anything like reality? i was frightened when i found out it was based on groton, but groton's still one of my top 3 :)

it has NOTHING to do with groton.
curtis sittenfeld may have met perhaps one or two people in her experience there that were comparable to the rainbow of characters at ault (which we will always find at every school...) but i highly doubt she met more. there's a lot of speculation that she was Lee in real life, which has been denied by her. so no, i really don't believe groton's like that. i have several friends there who are the nicest people in the world :)

(but I liked the book. it was worth a read, I think)

NEprepgoer. i was wondering what you scored on your SSAT's, percentage wise? also, could you tell me, only if you feel comfortable doing so, what kinds of extra curriculars you had? what do you like most about groton?

Sorry if thats to much, I am so nervous and I keep picking people's brains apart. Sorry, just anwser the questions that you have time for. :)

haha, you're right westcoast_
and I would call about the off campus interview
the food is AMAZING
the phone call thing isn't a big deal. people give others space, and you can always so somewhere else if you're super secret

Could someone tell me about the 8th grade class at Groton? I know it's small, but that's all I know about it. Are the 8th grade admissions more or less competitive than 9th or 10th? What types of students fill the 8th grade class?

Oh...now I feel very unobservant. The day I went, we ate lunch. There was an amazing salad bar and a pasta bar (better than any other schools), a sandwich station, and then a lot of stuff in the line including my fav...phyllo pastries stuffed with cheesy artichoke and spinach, and green beans, which I absolutely love. And these really good pumpkin cookies with icing in the center :) I would gain the Freshmen 15 at Groton, but the food's so good I wouldn't mind.

We have an exciting announcement for those of you interested in studying Mandarin. To date this language has been taught as an elective at Groton, but we will have a full program in place next fall. Under the leadership of Naichi Shih, Mandarin will fulfill the foreign language requirement at Groton School beginning in the fall of 2009.

I have a stupid question. Our son has applied to Groton along with 4 other schools. He has had all A's in middle school and takes both honors math and English courses. He is a very good singer and is active in both the honors choir and the drama progrms. He is also school VP. My fear is that even with all of this, his mediocre SSAT scores are going to kill his chances. He took it twice...63rd percentile the first time and 71% the second (SSAT percentiles). He is applying to the Third Form (grade 9). Any opinions as to his chances? We all really love Goton and of all the schools he has applied to, we think it would be the best fit. Other schools are Governors, Exeter, Deerfield and NMH.

Post #33 seems to deal directly with your question. Beyond that answer, it is very difficult to chance anyone. Even just "showing the love" for Groton may mean his application is looked at favorably. Good luck to your family.

apparently they're EXTREMELY fun for bonding (the three quarter walls, i mean. i call them three quarter walls lol)

people pretend to be superman on the walls and stuff, nobody really gets hurt from it, but it's instant bonding, especially if you're an 8th grade class of 30 or even a 9th grade class of 80
