Yesterday I was deferred from GTech, an upper tier school I was banking on. I even attended an engineering conference there last summer, and was told I would get in by my very realistic and experienced counselor.
2130 (710 CR 690 M 730 W)
4.0 UW GPA, 4.98 W
IB program
Varsity soccer captain
Plenty of other extras and service
My friend in New Mexico was denied, with a 35 ACT and a 2350 SAT and very good extras as well. Why is this? I hate to make excuses, but our demographic as white males must be a determining factor.
Nothing to do with being white, I got offered admission and I’m white. SAT is 2120, UW GPA is 3.6, stellar EC’s though. Gtech’s SAT average during EA was 2196. Sometimes it happens really, but I can assure you, it has nth to do with being white.
Yeah, that must be it. The white male demographic has a very tough time in this society.
I will point out that deferred isn’t rejected.
My very “white” son was accepted last yr and the profiles were similar. How do your stats compare in terms of the advanced coursework?
7 IB classes including calculus and chemistry… 1 honor class (physics… My school doesn’t offer AP/IB)
I only mention “white male” because another Puerto Rican friend, and a girl friend were both accepted despite having sub 2000 SATs and less qualifying extras. GT is dominated by men; it’s a 2:1 ratio.
Let me tell you about the twins on the GT board with similar stats…one was accepted to GT and one was deferred. BTW, I believe they were AA. Explain that. Sometimes there is nothing you can put your finger on. Don’t take it as an affront. Keep that deferral on the back burner (I think someone posted the stats from last year…think it was in the 27% range who were accepted…but double check as that’s just a best guess…and keep truckin’ with your other ideas.
