GT transfer.. Chance please

I am a freshman at FSU who isn't too fond of small town life. At the end of this semester I am expected to have a 3.6 GPA, due to bad personal news seconds before I took my Summer semesters math final :/. Hopefully my GPA will be stronger after spring term. I will have 36 credit hours at the end of this year, and will do another Summer term after possibly at UM or Miami Dade CC. I am a Hispanic and have a resume full of community service/EC. If SAT is applicable at this point I have a 1210/1600 and a 1850/2400. I have a lot of lineage including my father and four uncles. One or two of my cousins teach there as well. One of my uncles is friends with the current president of GT, but I doubt that would do me any good. Any ways what are my chances of getting into GT for fall 2011?

Your SAT scores do not matter, only your college GPA. What is your intended major, have you taken the required courses for that major, and what is your Math and Science GPA?

My intended major is Management, which I hear they have an exceptional program for. I will have all my pre-reqs for that major done by my spring semester, and so far since I am a freshman and a business major I have not taken any science courses. I got a B+ in pre calc and I’m doing really well in Business Calc so if all goes well then I plan to get an A. I will take Business Stats next semester and a science with lab. Any recommend science I should take? I am also taking some econ courses… I don’t know if that would apply to the math end at all?

Not business calc - you need to take Calculus I and Calculus II for admission to Georgia Tech for Management. Specifically, at Florida State you need to take MAC 2311 and 2312.

You also need two semesters of lab sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Calculus-based Physics, or Earth and Atmospheric Sciences) and two semesters of English. You have to complete all of those courses with grades before applying.

Without that, you will be automatically denied admission.

Isnt Business Calc considered equivalent to calc I? and I have both my English’s done already. No sciences though :/

No, it’s not.

The technical answer is that you can visit https://oscar.gatech.edu/pls/bprod/wwtraneq.P_TranEq_Ltr</a> Then pulldown to “F” and “Florida State” and look for classes that will transfer in as MATH 1501 and MATH 15X2. I did a search and only found MAC 2311 and MAC 2312. You need to complete both of those classes before applying.

From a practical perspective, “business calculus” is simply a survey of calculus and is not calculus. It’s the difference between reading Moby Dick and reading the Cliffs Notes for Moby Dick.

Hmm… I see, I still do get credit for a survey calculus class at least.
MAC 2233
Class Title: Transfer Course
Level: US
GT Equivalent Class(es)
GT Class GT Class Title GT Credit Hours
MATH 17X2 Transfer Survey-Calc
3

Yes and no. If you transfer to Tech, you’ll have passed all three (Calculus I, Calculus II, Survey of Calculus) and will receive credit for all three (Math 17X2, Math 1501, Math 15X2), but the Survey of Calculus class won’t grant you any additional benefit that Calculus I and II wouldn’t have.

So to recap, you still need to take MAC 2311, MAC 2312, then 2 lab sciences.

These look like your lab sciences options:
CHML 1046 (CHEM 1301 at GT) - General Chemistry
PHY 2048 (PHYS 2211 at GT) - Intro to Physics I
PHY 2049 (PHYS 2212 at GT) - Intro to Physics II

This may also work, but I would contact GT first:
BSCL 2010 (Transfer Biology Elective)
BSCL 2011 (Transfer Biology Elective)
CHM 1045C (Transfer Gen. Chem)
GLY 2010 (Earth Processes)

I would look ahead to summer so you can take one Math + one lab science in Spring then the other Math + another lab science in the Summer, then apply for admission Fall 2011 (allowing you into Tech Spring 2012). Keep your GPA in the 3.6-3.75 range with a 3.5+ Math and Science GPA, and you should be fine for admission.

Thanks a lot for the advice… One of my cousins actually teaches at GT so I’m going to talk to her and see what she recommends. My teachers at FSU want me to take Statistics next semester since that is a requirement here… should I ignore that and just take Calc I?

Statistics is a requirement for MGT majors as well (technically the class is MGT 2250). If your statistics class at FSU will transfer in place of that course, I would take it.

Otherwise, you have to hedge your bets. What if Calc I and II and Physics I and II destroy your FSU GPA and you can’t transfer? Do you really want to put yourself a whole year behind?

http://mgt.gatech.edu/programs/under/files/BSM%20credit%20sheet-with%20concentrations.pdf</a></p>

I got that off the GT management site. It says I either have to take Calc I or Calc Survey and Calc II or Finite math. I already have my credits for Calc Survey so I just need calc II/Finite math in addition to my two sciences.

Check the transfer website. Calc I and II are specifically required for transfers. No Survey of Calc.

[Georgia Institute of Technology :: Undergraduate Admission :: Transfer Requirements](<a href=“Blow the Whistle! (404 error: page not found) | Undergraduate Admission”>Blow the Whistle! (404 error: page not found) | Undergraduate Admission)

The requirement is more stringent because you weren’t admitted as a freshman and therefore must show your aptitude.

Hmmm… Thanks for the info, I heard from an employe at GT that they can be a bit relaxed on substitute courses. For example she said my survey calc class should have no problem filling that spot. She said as long as I speak to an admission counselor about it there should be no problem. As far as calc II goes I need to take that.

No, that’s not the case, but you can try. I wouldn’t take Survey of Calculus then Calc II. Survey is not the same as Calc I.
