GT vs AU vs GW

I applied to GT SFS and I would like to study in DC.
However, out of these three schools, what do you guys recommend that I go for?

What are you guys pros and cons for these schools?
It would definitely help me and whoever is also reading this post out :)

Not so sound snobbish, but Georgetown for IR blows GW and especially American out of the water. They're all fairly similiar in so much as they're all big in IR but Gtown has the higher prestige, quality of professor, caliber of student, and generally overall most intellectual enviornment. Now that's not to say that Georgetown students don't know how to have fun either. All also happen to prefer Georgetown's campus and location over the other two, which I believe the general consensus of most people, but by all means not everyone. If you had some specific comparisions you'd like to see, I'd be more than happy to try to clarify them for you.

Best of Luck!

aubrey, I think you talked about having financial issues in another post? If that was you, it might make sense to apply to all of three of those schools to see which one offers you the best aid package. Georgetown is obviously the most prestigious of the three schools, and its location is excellent if you like to be close to restaurants/bars/shopping. GW is in the heart of downtown DC. AU is in the most suburban part of the city - but it's an easy commute to both Georgetown and downtown. GW has no real campus, while AU and Gtown have relatively small, manageable campuses. It really depends on which environment you prefer, and which school you can afford to attend.

LIMOMOF2: Yes, that was me, but I think I will get exceptional finaid due to my situation. If not, I am also applying to GMS, where I know I will have a slim chance, but I think I'm a good candidate for it. And thanks for the comparison!

Mikey: Do you happen to go to GT? If so, how is your experience so far?

I know that I want to go to GT for SFS, but I'm not sure if the Jesuit Catholic omnipresent is good for me since I'm not religious. There is also the one incident that you mention about the hate crime against a gay student. I'm transgender so I do not know where I shall fit. And that was why I was considering GW and AU...since they are in the heart of DC...but b/c GW is the most expensive school in the country and doesn't give that many aid.

Aubrey, I'm a freshman at Gtown and I love it so far. I've made some really great friends already, love most of my class/major, and have joined a few really cool clubs on campus, mostly dealing with IR and debate. In terms of financial aid, GU gave me the best package of any of the schools I got into (that includes two ivies) so if you qualify for need, in my experience they did a good job meeting it,

In terms of religious pressence, its basically there only if you want it to be. The core does require two theology courses however I've found my Problem of God class this semester to be really a great learning experience, focusing on the philosophical underpinnings of many religious notions, as well as teaching how to be critical of many religious ideas.

The last topic you touch on is the toughest for me to answer, since I do have a decent knowledge of the gay community on campus, but really have no real knowledge of transgender life on campus, but i'll give it a shot. Overall the student population seems to be very open to LGBTQ lifestyles in principle. That's not to say you don't have the random bigot (see the recent hate crime) which you will find anywhere. The LGBTQ group on campus, GU Pride is extremely active, especially i guess over the past semester, in gaining more rights on campus, and are starting to gain a good deal of traction. The catholic identidy of Gtown does hamper the efforts of the University's administration in providing for the gay/transgender community however they are currently in the process of seriously looking at the university's policies.

In terms of transgender rights, GU Pride is holding a Gender Liberation Week this coming week actually, if you have a facebook here is the group link Facebook | Login . (If the link doesn't work just search Georgetown Gender Liberation Week 2007 in facebook) My one critique about the gay community on campus would be at times it definitely seems to self-segregate itself, however i do think that this is a normal phenomenom across the country. Hopefully this was somewhat helpfull, feel free to PM if u have any additional questions.

Best of Luck and Hoya Saxa!!

Thanks Mikey!
This is really helpful stuff!
If there are as many friendly people in GT as you, I would go in a heart beat if I was accepted.
And thanks for the GU link.
I'm feeling only the more positive vibes from Georgetown... by the way, are you in SFS? Peacee
