GTstudent willing to answer questions

Anyone know how involved GT is with Nasa? I'm going to try and transfer into the Aerospace College, and look for some internships with them. I know of a couple of GT students who interned with NASA.

Hey gt08, I had a question for you about statistical probability of transfer acceptance. HS GPA of 2.4 and College GPA of 3.62 with 69 credits amassed. However took two yrs. off and worked at a neuro science lab, did advertising/marketing for a sports agency, tutored students in Chemistry/math. But never took the SAT'S, and at GT you don't need them to transfer. Also, HS transcript is for record keeping purposes only.

What are my chances of acceptance to Georgia Tech
Major = Biochemistry

If there are any GTech students/former students still around---just wondered about the social life? My son is interested in majoring in comp sci and likes the southern, warmer weather (we're from NJ) but he was completely scared away from GTech by the 70/30 male/female ratio he heard about.

Wondered if those stats were accurate and if there is a pretty lively social life there? Son is low-key, but is looking forward to some nice social experiences in college (can't blame him!).

Thanks for any thoughts!!

There's plenty of social life here at Tech. However, you have to go look for it and get it, it's not just going to come to you. There are hundreds of groups/organizations, events, and of course, Greek Life.

Yes, it is 'true' that we have a 70/30 male/female ratio here at Tech, but lately, (since 2006) the ratio has geared more towards 65/35. This past matriculating class brought in an even larger number of girls so the ratio may become better overall.

As for social scenes, you have to actively go out and search for it or just be confronted by social people themselves. You definitely get what you put into it. I went the Greek route, but not my first semester here, and though my 'social' network lies within mostly my Fraternity, I did make some great friends on my hall that I still talk to, and from some of my classes.

As for social experiences, at least three times a semester, I go up to Athens, GA (UGA) or travel down to cities down in Florida just to break away from what is known as Georgia Tech.

As long as your son is not a social outcast, did well in making friends during High School, I'm sure he'll be more than fine here, as long as he doesn't play WoW all day like the majority of 'unsocial' people here.

Yes it's not very noticeable outside of class (it's super noticeable that no girls are in ECE though). I went to undergrad at UF, and I'll say the girls are attractive, depending on his opinion of what is attractive; All the girls are either asian or southern belle types.

Honestly, the social life is fine as long as you're cool with going off campus for it. Every party I've been to has had a cross section of Emory, GaTech and Georgia State students.

Do you know if the honors program is open to transfer students or just freshmen?

Just wondering how hard my first year would be? Should I tone it down?
I am an average student, but willing to work hard.

Fall:

Gen Psych-3
Bio Principles-4
Gen Chem- 4
Intro Phys I-4
Freshman Seminar- 1

Spring
Calc II- 4
Inorganic+lab-4
Phys II-4
History -3

Thanks.

Adamantium,

I AP’d out of my two lab science requirements, so I do not know for sure, but I think you may want to consider dropping one or even two of those three lab sciences in your first semester.

For anyone taking physics,

is classical I a more complicated and harder version of physics I (mechanics)?
would just taking classical I and biochemistry during the summer be too much? Neither are lab sciences.

When can I begin course registration?
I heard something about needing to attend FASET first…

There’s two versions of physics at Tech: Classical and Modern. They don’t specifically spell it out in Oscar which is which…you gotta click on the course and read the description. Most people here will tell you that Modern is easier than Classical. I can’t tell you for sure because I took Classical I & II…but everyone seems to have an easier time in Modern, the only bad thing about Modern is that programming is involved in lab.

As for registration…during FASET you will be given a packet with a list of pre-registered courses. Usually people take mostly the same stuff freshman year, depending on your major and AP credits. Tech does a decent job at selecting the classes for you your first semester but you have the opportunity to switch your schedule around during the first week of school when Phase 2 registration opens, then you will be able to freely add and drop courses. It’s hard to switch too much around cuz you guys are at the bottom of the totem pole and you get all the general courses and you don’t have the proper prerequisites for most other classes.

Pre-registration happened in the past. Don’t count on it this year at FASET…

So does that mean we have to choose our classes from the beginning? I like that better than pre-registered courses.

“August 11, 2009 FASET V Early Arrival at no additional charge<”
Does “Early Arrival” mean this is a move-in date? As in my parents can ditch and I will officially be in college?
And regarding people registering at FASET, since FASET V is pretty late, can I register for classes online? Is there a packet or guide somewhere online similar to the one given to people who attend FASET that can help me with course regis?

Since Session V is for out of state students, I think early arrival means that students will have rooms available for them on friday night.
The other FASET sessions usually start at 8 AM on Saturday, which isn’t that big a problem for students who live relatively close by. Out of stater’s would have to have rooming for Friday night.

How are the beds? I’m not sure exactly which residence hall I’ll be in yet, but my top picks were Caldwell, Folk, and Armstrong (all picks are on west campus, freshman experience dorms).

Are they fine, or should i grab some egg crate foam?

I was a part of the Folk, Caldwell, and Armstrong residence hall two years back. I thought the beds were fine.

Also, should i get sheets from Tech or buy on my own?

Buy your own. You can get Twin XL sheets from any major department store for much, much less.
