Guaranteed NMF Institutional Scholarship Deadlines

A question about scholarship application deadlines:

Many schools that offer guaranteed scholarships for National Merit finalists also have scholarship application deadlines. My question is, do those deadlines apply to guaranteed NMF scholarships?

Alabama, for example, offers a guaranteed NMF full ride. They also have a scholarship application deadline of December 1. I used to assume that "guaranteed" meant that you get the scholarship no matter when you apply, but now that December 1 is fast approaching, I'm worried that may not be true!

EDIT:

I feel foolish now, but I have answered my own question about Alabama, at least. I am leaving this posted for anyone else who may be wondering the same thing.

The Alabama scholarship office says that students must submit both the application for admission and the scholarship application by December 1 in order to qualify for the National Merit scholarship.

^^^

don’t feel foolish, it’s all very confusing! :)

Re: Alabama…
Did the scholarship office tell you that after you apply online to the university, that you’ll get an email a few days later with “log on” info (log on is usually first initial, middle initial, last name - if your last name is common, then it’s something like abjones256

Then you create your log on account and password, and then apply for the NM scholarship. No essay  First, you’ll be given the Presidential, then when your child is named NMF, you get awarded the rest. :)

BTW…I think your son is applying as an engineering student?? If so, he’ll get an additional $2500 per year for that.

But…don’t do what some do…don’t wait until acceptance to apply for scholarship. Apply for scholarships right after getting the email.

You are a godsend for anyone applying to Alabama, M2CK. They really ought to pay you. If they’re not already. ;)

Yes.

Probably not. He’ll probably be in one of the physical sciences, but the extra $2,500 for engineering students is great to know about.

Ah, this they did not tell me. Thank you so much!

^^^^

No, not being paid… LOL…just spending a lot of time with a loved one who is fighting stage 3 cancer. So, CC is a nice distraction.

Since UA and other schools are being bombed with apps right now, it might take a bit to get the acceptance.

However…and this is a biggie…if your son is interested in applying to UA’s elite Computer-Based Honors Program or the elite Fellows program, then, you might have to be a bit pro-active since you can’t apply for either program until after acceptance and there is a deadline for both programs. But, I’m sure it can be handled by talking to the right people. Let me know if this is something your son would be interested in.

The above 2 honors programs are very competitive - only 40 students allowed in each program and students are applying from all over the country. The average ACT is 33 for these students. My DS1 is in CBHP, so I know a lot about that one.

Don’t let the name fool you. CBHP not a comp science program. It’s using technology for research in various fields - bio, chem, eng’g, physics, pre-med, pre-law or even the liberal arts. Each student works closely with a PhD or MD doing research related to the student’s major. My son spent last year working with 3 OB-GYNs doing research to reduce infant deaths.

Fellows is newer, but equally exciting.

BTW, the Honors College’s other 2 honors programs admit by stats, but an application must be done nonetheless…

Submitted the 'Bama app today! Exciting!

Good for you. Now…within a couple of days, you’ll receive an email with log on info and CWID number (College wide ID number) With that info, your son will set up his password and be able to log on to MyBama and apply for scholarships.

Don’t wait until acceptance to apply for scholarships. There is a Dec 1 deadline, so do the scholarship app as soon as you get that email!

Make sure that scores and transcripts are sent ASAP!!! Once those are in, acceptance will happen rather soon. Your “area rep” can help “move this along”.

If your son is interested in applying to one of the competitive honors programs, there are deadlines approaching. Let me know if he’s interested in one of those programs (CBHP or Fellows). Fellows (University Fellows Experience) deadline is Dec 4th, so that could be an issue. CBHP deadline is in early January. I think your son is better suited for CBHP, but I could be wrong. :)

Also, if he’s interested in one of the competitive programs, he needs to apply to University Honors program first. That’s easy to do.

If you have any questions, put them here or pm me. :)
