In a year, I'll be officially joining the ILR Class of 2015, but I got guaranteed transfer this year, which basically means that I have to go to another school for a year, get my credits and maintain a good GPA, and then I'll be ok to go up to Cornell. I understand this part (mostly), but I'm having some trouble figuring out what to do for the college that I'll be going to in the meantime. Do I go to my state school and tell them that I'm transferring out? Do I tell my counselor that I'm planning on transferring, or just hide the fact that I'm only there for a year?

I'm not entirely sure what I'm supposed to do with the college I'll be spending my first year. Can anyone give me advice for how I go about doing this?

Don’t say anything until the year is over. Simply go through the school year as if you were going to stay there for four years, then inform your friends of your decision once you conclude your freshman year.

If you start at one of the NYS community colleges, your advisor will have worked with students just like you before. Many advisors at the CUNY and SUNY campuses will as well. No matter where you do decide to spend your first year, find out from the ILR what kind of classes they want you to take so that you will be ready when you get to Cornell.

Go to your first college, make the most of the opportunities for you there, do as well as you can there and try to love it. Maybe at the end of the year you will even not want to transfer.
