Guest Student

I am currently a student at North Carolina State, but I can’t get CODA credit from Chem 101 this semester. Because NC State limits course attempts at 2, I want to take Gen Chem elsewhere and transfer the credit in. Many Michigan colleges (I’m not sure about others) offer Guest Student status. Could I take an online Gen Chem at somewhere like Eastern and transfer it in after? What are the implications with this? Would I be better off working less in the summer and taking it in person at a local community college? Can I somehow bypass the lab portion because NCSU has them separately? Any insight is helpful

Your NCSU registrar is the gate keeper on transferrable credits. You should visit/call them. Only they can tell you.

If you can’t pass a basic chemistry class, I suggest rethinking engineering as a possible career path. The fact that you needed more than two attempts should be a red flag. The lab portion is listed as a separate course and is also a requirement.

@T26E4
Are students allowed to get all the CODA classes using AP, and declare major during first year itself?

@wolfwing123 I replied when the OP put this on the general “college admissions” forum and asked an extremely pointed question about NCSU. I have no idea what NCSU’s policies are.

Call (or preferably go to) the registrar and ask. Also have the registrar confirm what I am about to tell you.

But to address some of your questions - yes, NC schools will allow you to take classes as a “non-degree seeking student”, but I believe this is really meant for someone in the community to come take a class as professional development. Your status as an NCSU student may prevent this. You do have the option of taking a class at a community college and transferring the credit back to NCSU. I know students will do this as a way to pick up a class or two while home for the summer.

The Lab and Lecture are two separate entities. I know a student who did not get credit for biology lecture but passed the lab. She ended up taking a different science class to get the lecture credit and did not have to re-take the lab.
