Hey, I'm a high school freshman. I want to go to one of the service academies- preferably USNA/ USMA, but i'm open to all of them. Since I haven't really started hs yet or taken any tests, most of these will be estimations/ projections-

ECs:
Football
Swimming
Volleyball (?)
CAP
Student Gov't
NHS
Foreign Language HS
Speech Team
Key Club
(Leadership positions in some)
Good Community service
Good fitness

Academic:
All AP Classes
Top 10%
Test Well
3.5+ GPA unweighted

REmember, most of these will change somehow, so just tell me if i'm on a good track, what i should do differently, and which ones i will be most likely to make it into.

Yea, your on a good track. Definately keep up the grades and if you can stay active in some of the activities you listed, I'd say thats the best you can do. Try to keep up the leadership positions and your fitness level.

Good track, pumpkin. You can get a lot of information on the academy web sites. Also, you can request information be sent to you - even as a freshman. That will get you on their mailing lists for your entire high school career.

My only question is how does a high school freshman schedule all AP classes?

Mom-
WIth the track i am on, i will be in all ap classes. By sophomore year i should be in a couple via gifted classes.
Thanks for the replies and i'll try to update as myh igh s hool career progresses

Pumpkin

I refer you to my "don't let anyone tell you" post on the USMA board. I hate seeing these kinds of posts.

Take the core courses at first and really try to learn the material particularly in Math/Science. Do as well as you can in Algebra! You should also take a well-rounded curriculum that you will enjoy ie music, wieghtlifting, art etc... My son has been in the IB courses selectively but has also taken a lot of music, art and weighttraining. These courses will help you become a well-educated individual and thus will open many doors for your future.

As far as being involved, select activities that you really feel will help either the school or the community or that you will really enjoy. Just being in clubs etc... doesn't mean anything.

Furthermore, do not get frantic. You should enjoy high school. It can and should be a great time for you. If you worry too much about grades, scores etc... you will miss out on a lot.

I'm sorry if I so preachy, but I have seen a lot of exceptional kids burn out.

I have to agree with Oregon Mom...work hard, but don't forget to take time to enjoy your high school years...you only get to go through them once!
