Guide to Dorms at Michigan

Is Couzens considered an “East Campus dorm”? I want to join HSSP, but am quite fond of non-vegan food. Also, wouldn’t want to live by too many hipsters ;)

Couzens is considered a “hill” dorm. It is on the northeastern corner of central campus. You would eat at the Hill Dining Center at Mojo, which is very large and has many food options. East Quad is the Residential College dorm which has been known for vegan food and hipsters.

Can you still do the first year experience even if you live in another residence hall, say, Alice Lloyd? And how are the people in Lloyd? I haven’t seen too much posted on here about the social life in that hall.

Wolverine131, my son lives in Alice Lloyd and is in the Lloyds Hall Scholars program. He has made some great friends and they do socialize quite a bit. Some have joined fraternities and sororities. Son was worried they students might be too artsy, but that’s not been the case at all. Most just enjoy writing and wanted to live on Central campus, so they applied for Lloyds Hall. It’s coed, which in Alice Lloyd means guys and girls, every other room, not by corridor or floor. Son has really enjoyed this. His girlfriend, who he met at Michigan, lives three doors down. Guys and girls do have their own bathrooms. Whenever we Skype, there are students coming in and out of his room the whole time, so it definitely is social. If you don’t want people coming in and out, you close your door.

Thanks Sportsmom! I was just worried that joining a learning community might limit me socially, but this doesn’t seem to be the case, at least with Lloyd. I also enjoy writing and the hall looks nice, so I will be applying for next year.

Alice Lloyd, after the renovation, is crazy nice. The air conditioning is great at the start of the school year. Son jokingly complained about living in such a nice dorm, versus the normal “crappy” dorm, but based on the friends he’s made, he wouldn’t change a thing. He has friends who live in Markley, North Campus, and other dorms so obviously students get out and mingle no matter where they live. I hope you are accepted into Lloyds Hall. I think you’ll really enjoy it.

wolverine 131, I’m pretty sure to be in First Year Experience you need to live in Markley, Northwood or Baits II. Lloyd is a pretty social dorm, probably more than Mojo or Stockwell. Good mix of freshman and upperclassmen.

Do you know anyone who lived in a triple? i’m thinking about requesting one to save money but i’m unsure if this is a good option.

forgot to say i’ll be an incoming freshman

if you choose first year experience but don’t get markley, does that mean you’re stuck on north campus??

Out of curiosity, why did you put being with RC students as a con of the East Quad?

OP describes the RC students as “mainly very liberal/ hipster”. I will let you read between the lines.

I wouldn’t describe RC students as anymore “liberal/hipster” than the rest of the school. However, I would say that they are, on average, a little bit more… odd than the rest of campus. Many of the RC kids I’ve interacted with have been a bit strange, and I don’t think I’m alone in feeling that way, heh.

mojo doesn’t have much of a nerdy feel. No, its not Markley but its no different than loyd or cousins in term of “feel”

entenduintransit read between the lines

Anyone have any more insight about this “nerdy feel” of mojo? I applied for MRC because I don’t want to be on north but I’m worried it won’t be very social

This guide is awesome!!! I totally want to live in the Cambrdige House when I’m an upperclassman!
Is Baits the only freshman dorm with a private bathroom?? I don’t want to live in the Northwood apartments my first year, and none of those little learning communities interest me. I actually prefer an antisocial dorm life because I’m a shy person.
I totally just planned out my dream living arrangements for the next 4 years because this guide was so awesome!

Haha, you don’t want to live in Cambridge as an upperclassman. You don’t want to live in university housing period as an upperclassman.

i would say EQ is more hippy than hipster.

“Out of curiosity, why did you put being with RC students as a con of the East Quad?”
Because hippies are annoying

Baits has semi-private bathrooms which you share with 3 or 4 other people in your suite.
