You can do that deposit on Feb 1.

Alamemom, the University REsidential College, which is in Binkrant; do you have to apply for it? I like the idea of housing with other scholars and being apart of this program. Looks very interesting!

I think most of the residential colleges have a little essay and application - but I am not sure (daughter did one for Parkside IRC). The housing application process will take you through it step-by-step.

Sweet!! Can’t wait.

One question, is there wifi in the dorms and most of campus?

There is wifi but the signals are weak in most dorm buildings. There are at least two ethernet ports in each room though, so you can use old-fashioned wired internet.

And around campus, ie libraries, is wifi good?

Thank you for your responses, alamemom and Jasonvdm! :D

I have another question: I know that only some halls will have air conditioning so how is it in the rooms that don’t? I grew up in Southern California weather so I understand that sometimes it can get uncomfortably hot. :P

From what I read from around here, the lack of AC isn’t as big of a deal as you would imagine. Someone said that it’s only an issue for 2 or 3 days in the year in another thread. Besides, the weather in SoCal during the school year is amazing. If anything it’s comfortable.

If anyone stayed in New/North, how beneficial/inconvenient was it to have/not have a sink in your room? In other words, is a sink worth nearly $400 a semester for a double?

Random question for anyone to answer: If I get accepted in March, do you think I will still have a good chance at getting a triple in Birnkrant? There are only 39 spaces, according to the USC housing page, and I know that all the January scholarship kids will be able to apply before then!
Thanks!

Yeah, to go along with Bread, does New/North usually fill up? I’m assuming Birnkrant usually does since it states that it consists of mostly Trustee/Presidential scholars.

Birnkrant is not mostly T/P scholars, so I’m not sure where you heard that. In fact, I think most of the scholars are in another dorm altogether - sorry, I forget the name - Marks? My son knows lots of kids living in Birnkrant who did not get accepted until the regular time. (We heard the triples do go fast, though.)

Meanwhile, my son’s roommate in Parkside (one the “music” floor) is a Trustee scholar, so it’s not like they all go to one place.

New/North is the biggest dorm on campus, but also one of the most desired. I’ve heard that all the residents on the floor must divide the cost of cleaning every time someone throws up there (which is pretty often), but I don’t know if that’s true.

Birnkrant is nice, but obviously sucks during heat waves, like the one we had this fall.

I don’t really like most of Southside (Pardee, Marks, Marks, Trojan) at all.

I’m in Parkside A&H and I love it. It is quiet, true, and far away, but it’s so nice! Plus AC, private(ish) bathrooms, Parkside Cafe, Parkside Express and the trams… it’s really a great place to live and I’m so glad I live here. Also, it is nice being able to sleep whenever I want. Like 3 AM. Though Exposition is loud… but it’s city noise, which I can handle.

Jazz: That is what the booklet I received said. Birnkrant is home to the University Residential College, which is just for T/P scholars and other honoree freshmen. Maybe not the whole dorm, but a good part of it. Mark’s and Honors hall is for honor students, T/P are not honor students yet.

I think the University Residential College is brand new. It said it was opening this year so maybe they redesigned the program?

Maybe! It sounds really awesome, definitely a deal maker.

I agree! I hope to get in there.

So if I get in RD, will I be able to get a double at New/North? Ever since I first started looking at USC, I’ve wanted to stay there. I just never felt that the others (minus Birkrant) would be a place I could call “home.”

BigKev, my son has regular admit friends in New/North and Birnkrant. Just apply for housing the second you get your packet. Or the second you see any sign of admittance on USConnect.

Awesome advice, jazz/shreddermom. The housing deposit is non-binding, correct?

BigKev, if for any reason (scholarship, FA, anything) you decide not to attend USC, the $45 is all you have to lose. My son received his acceptance around March 13 (a small but nice music scholarship came shortly after) and immediately registered for housing. He got his first choice, which was Parkside. But he definitely has friends accepted around then also go their first choices in other dorms, including both New/North and Birnkrant. I’m guessing they all made that $45 deposit the second they received their packets.

Many students don’t know the tip and wait until after they commit to USC to apply for housing.
