^ I think a big problem people had with Gateway was because they initially offered free parking and then were charging a high semester rate to use that garage, too – yes? Otherwise, everything you said was pretty much everything I heard about Gateway. (Except for the fact that, when my friend moved in, the ceilings were “unfinished” and there were no light fixtures! Oops!)

At least the management has been changed? But I am curious to what they are charging now. $1000 to share a room ($2000 a room) is just plain crazy. You can get a huge loft apartment downtown for that price.

Hello Zelda, first off, very good write up. Secondly, i think i overreacted about Centennial. I’ve been looking at the area on google street view, and it seems pretty good to me. I live in Jackson, Mississippi which is far more dangerous than the area i will be living in Los Angeles. Yes, it is not Beverly Hills, but with certain precautions i will be fine. So i’ve decided on Centennial. The price is pretty reasonable and despite not being as close(yes i am lazy) to campus as i wanted, it is not that bad, and it has parking. I will have my own room, which i really like. I have no problem having roommates( I had several during my undergrad studies), but i do like my own space. Also, i’ve noticed it is close to a tram stop. How often does it run? Do you know where i can get a schedule? Is it only for USC students?
Anyways, best of luck to everyone…Fight on my friends!!!

thank you for the info of the tramp stops!!! west 27th sounds great, and it was kind of the “obstacle” my dad was giving me … he is suuuuper paranoid because he listen that some rapes had occurred … S: u know dads… I will be cautious … it is located in a safe area, right?

^“Safe” is relative. No one is truly safe anywhere in the world. You could be in somewhere “wealthy” in Southern California like Santa Monica and still get assaulted/robbed/raped/murdered. Use common sense, be aware of your surroundings, do not draw attention to yourself – meaning, don’t walk around with a $1,000 handbag at 3am talking on your iPhone alone because that makes you an easy target of crime.

I am sure that, with this new building, there will be security and a DPS presence. If you’re smart, you should be fine. The worst thing that happened to me at USC was a stolen bike; I know some people have had worse happen to them, but similar crimes happen just as frequently on other college campuses. Much of the theft (and even a majority of sexual assaults) on campuses, including USC, are student-to-student crimes.

Yes, one of the 1st things my D did when she was going to start at USC was to sit down with her friends who attend USC & ask them what to do about carrying her keys, money and other items around campus and the surrounding area. They gave her very candid and honest advice. They try not to carry ANY purse at all, just what will fit into their pockets and be alert to their surroundings. Not walking around alone late at night and especially having someone sober around to be sure folks get home safely is very important. They have a good FREE “campus cruiser” service that will drive students between campus & university housing & nearby within set hours that are well publicized. She ALWAYS wears comfortable shoes and stays away from questionable situations.

Both of my kids & their friends have been pretty safe at USC. S was there for 4 years and D has been there 2.5 so far. Of course, as posted above, safety is relative and can vary–there can be random acts pretty much anywhere and everywhere, but staying alert and taking a few precautions goes far in having a happy and safe experience.

$1000 bonus!
I can’t keep my lease at Gateway & need to sublet as soon as possible! $925/per month with no transfer charges PLUS I’ll give you $1000.
Let me know if interested. Thanks.

There are photos of both buildings on the USC housing site, so I recommend you look there to see what the facilities are like.

Both are student housing complexes, so your neighbors will be nearly all undergraduate students. (Maybe one or two grad students?) There will be no non-students in the buildings.

If you are a transfer and still looking for USC owned housing, my daughter is looking for someone to take over her lease for next year in Founders. See it on the USC housing site, 4 people in a 2 bdr, price & location are really good. Willing to subsidize the cost. PM me if interested

Just wanted to let any transfers/grad students know:

I’ve been on campus for the past week for grad school stuff and there are A LOT of houses and apartments in the area north of campus that are still leasing for the school year. If you can get out to LA early, it’ll probably be a good idea. So many buildings and (nice) houses that haven’t been filled up!
