Your financial aid is being calculated for the cheapest dorm option. If you opt to live in one of the more expensive dorms the difference between that and the cheapest option will not be covered by financial aid because it isn’t part of the Cost of Attendance. The difference isn’t HUGE but it does add up a bit. You can offset it by being more frugal in other areas though.

the birnkrant triples tend to be very popular (seeing as they are one of the most roomy dorms for the amount of people), and thus plenty of people sign for them.

im not at liberty to say whether you’ll get it or not, but my best guess, seeing as you signed up for housing late in the game (with respect to the overachievers who signed up as soon as you could), i would make sure that you also like your second preference and prepare yourself to not get your first. you could get it, you could not. all depends on how many people above you in line also chose the birnkrant triple as their first choice.

The farthest I can be right now is roomates, right? When is housing decided?

I’m a bit confused about the housing website. I’ll most likely going but am still waiting on financial aid. I know about the $30 fee if you continue with the housing page, but this disclaimer made me think twice about proceeding with the application:

If I continue with the housing application, do I automatically get charged for the housing fees? Or does that come later in the process?

Thanks!

as i understand it, you still have to accept the contract and pay a deposit of $400 before you are totally committed to housing.

yay ok thanks.

I am coming to USC from across the country and have a few questions.

What housing companies or complexes are available off-campus?

What is the best area to live immediately off-campus?
North/South/East/West? Best streets? Streets to avoid?

Where do grad students live off-campus?

Thanks.

There are very many companies and complexes off-campus. I wouldn’t know where to begin with that question.

The vast majority of USC students live immediately north of campus. Avoid the south part of campus.

Grad students live north and west of campus. Many drive to USC though, and don’t live as close to the campus as undergrads. I’d say west LA and downtown LA has many USC grad students.

surferbeach, I only know 2 USC grad students and they live together in an apartment in Century City. I’m not sure how many other USC students live around there, though. It is a bit of a drive, especially with traffic. Probably like 15-25 minutes if I remember right?

Avoid south and east of campus. Most grad students live north or west.

There are a bunch of companies as well as USC housing. As a start I would look at the daily trojan classifieds:
[Daily Trojan - Classifieds](http://www.dailytrojan.com/classifieds)

I would also check facebook marketplace and craigslist.

I submitted a reassignment form and put Parkside down as one of my choices. Later I found that all persons applying to Parkside Apts. must submit a supplmental form. I have not been able to find this form… can someone steer me the right way?

Perfect, thanks!

Ok so I am a transfer student and I am stuck between two housing options, Century apartments and IRC. Which ones would be better if i want to meet ppl and wont have a car or know anyone and want to eventually join a fraternity?

wow, how’d you get “stuck” with those two great options?

Is anyone else having issues with accessing the housing application? It appears that I was reassigned (as the main page says that I’m now in Troy), but when I go to the “Rooms” tab on the application, it says that I am not assigned a room yet, so I have no way of contacting my new roommates.

Behold: As a transfer student, it’s a tough call. IRC is generally freshmen housing and Century is generally for upperclassmen (mostly sophomores). However, IRC has a reputation of being of the most unsocial freshmen dorms since it is set up in a suite style and houses many of the international students. With that said though, it still houses mainly freshmen, so most people will be new there and very open to meeting new people, though from people I’ve met, some people have difficulty meeting people outside of their suites. On the other hand, Century will likely have people closer to your grade level in apartment styles. However, it is also much more likely that people may not be as readily looking for friends as they will likely have some group of friends already.

So yeah, that might not have helped much, but hopefully gives you some insight. Another quick note to realize is that IRC is suite styles (ie you’ll need a meal plan) whereas Century has kitchens for each apartment. So if you want to cook, I’d DEFINITELY say Century. Otherwise it’s a tossup, though I’d still go with Century.

i agree. you should go to century. i stayed at irc last year. i got to know and become friends with everyone in my hall- not just in my suite. but i know kids on other floors who just knew ppl in their suite. but as a transfer, i think you’ll more easily meet people of your age at century. i’d say irc is a nice experience but for incoming freshman students.

Well the reason that i was choosing IRC over century was because i thought being on campus housing would be easier to meet new ppl and make friends. I thought that with IRC i would get to be a part of a community and i am just scared that with century i wont meet many ppl and i will be a loner. I guess i just want the place in which i can get help if i need it and also have fun and meet ppl with the same interests.

Well I am 19 and i also want to join a fraternity so which will be better for that in terms of meeting ppl who also want to do that?
