Guilford College?

Anyone have any personal experience with Guilford College?

One of my kids has a good friend there-- bright girl, middling grades (Bs and Cs I think, honors classes although I think no APs). She loves it there and convinced her parents to let her go even though the parents liked other places better. She did tell my daughter there was quite a bit of pot but I don't think this girl felt a push to consume. Sorry the info is so second-hand.

Happyniece is a first year student at Guilford College. So far, she loves it there, and reports producing 3 to 5 page papers at the drop of a hat for her classes. Not a complaint mind you, just the only comment I've heard so far about the coursework. She found out about Guilford in the Colleges that Change Lives book. None of us had heard of it before.

I know some of the recent students, including several who were Bonner Scholars. All were very pleased with the quality of their college experience (and turned into remarkable young adults.)

Guilford is a Quaker-affliated college and several of D1's classmates from the Quaker high school she attended went there. From what she tells me, all of these classmates were happy with Guilford. My only experience with Quaker schools was at the secondary level, and I was impressed with the nurturing environment D1's school offered.

I have a good friend whose daughter graduated from Guilford last year. It was a great fit for her; would not have been for her sister (or for my DS, who was a senior in HS at the time). I heard great stories about the guest lecturers--my friend was so impressed with the school and education he ended up on the Board of Visitors. I have not visited but believe it's fairly earthy, liberal, . . . If it sounds like a possible fit, I'm sure it's worth a visit. My guess is a prospective student would figure out pretty quickly if he/she would be happy there.

Good location, within a few miles of three other colleges, and there is excellent public transportation. Granola-ish kids; a co-worker's son attends, received some scholarship money (high SAT/low GPA), enjoys the school very much. Liberal. Community-minded.

My D liked the campus and the environ but when we visited, the office that gives tours was closed.
