Hello everyone. I am a hopefull applicant from India for getting in Computer Science in top universities. I have applied in most of IVYs and a few more.
I have completed all the necessities for my application. I have applied for financial aid too as I belong to a middle class family.
Now what I am really worried about is my scores. I did well in SAT subject tests. I got perfect score {800} in both Mathematics level 2 and physics. But my SAT score are very very poor. I’m scoring 1360 only. Math= 780 and English=580. I know it is not worthy to be presented to IVYs but i donot have any option. I didnot know about anything no sooner than this november. I gave subject test in November and SAT in December this year. My unweoghted GPA is 3.85
Now I had a lot expectations from my result. I don’t know how I got too wrong at English. My command in English isn’t that bad. But still I had my luck.
Can somebody please help me through. What could be my chance of still making it to some good University.
[I can only apply to those universities which can provide financial aid to international students]
Well, realistically, you have to consider the fact that you may be rejected if you only applied to top Ivy schools.
These are the following reasons:
- you’re asking for financial aid
- you don’t have tip top grades and test scores which are expected of Ivy candidates.
- You are an international student.
- You are applying for computer science which is an impacted major at most universities.
In order to get into the schools you have to be one of the top students from your country. There is a finite set of seats at the Ivies… You would be competing with the thousands of countrymen applying from India.
Your chances are probably less than 1%.
Hopefully, you have other options in your country.
Aunt Bea, what other school you think I can apply then?
And yea I have some options in India. Maybe not very easy {IITs} but I would give my best shot to em. Still If you could suggest me sth beneficial., I’ll be highly thankful!
You could try the University of Alabama. It’s a very good school but it’s not well-known outside of the US. It is becoming more and more popular with US students who need academic scholarships. They provide scholarships for tuition only if you have a certain SAT score. This means that you’d have to pay for your housing and meals in addition to travel and other expenses but the tuition would be taken care of. It is open to international students.
Check out their website. https://scholarships.ua.edu/freshman/out-of-state/
I think that your chances at the Ivy League schools and other schools in the US that meet full need for international students are not very good.
Your best chances are probably to attend university in India for your bachelor’s degree. Work hard to get good grades. While you are at it, work on improving your English. If you have spare time then watch movies and Netflix shows in English and find friends who want to have conversations in English.
Then you might want to consider getting a master’s degree in the US. Of course you could apply to get a master’s right after getting your bachelors (you send in applications at the beginning of your senior year) or you could work for a year or two in India and then apply to master’s programs.
