Guys, the purpose of Passage 1 (Historians) is...

to correct a misconception.
Okay, seems to be the consensus here is
either "benefits of history" or "importance of history"

If you chose either one above, then
you are TRICKED into SAT questions!

Of course, the main story that the author of passage 1
is unfolding is about how USEFUL history is to current society or even future.

But,
the very first sentence makes it clear that
"usually people often think ... blah blah"
but then he says "it's an error"
then he goes on to say how historians are indispensable guides in our times

so, from a bigger picture, it's "to correct a misconception"

When you approach primary purpose question like this,
it is absolutely essential that you stay tuned to exactly
WHY the authore WROTE this passage!

For bonus,
here are all VOCAB IN CONTEXT questions.

charter - chronice

sounding -proclaiming

lies - resides

melt - merge

crush - overabundance

oh, by the way

NO DOUBT "CHARLATAN - SARDONIC" PACKAGE

oh ya i remmeber almost choosing a misconception. but the whole passage, and he talks about a misconception for..... 2 sentences?

why do people say its a package?

what if i put baffled instead of sardonic and charlatan for the other question

It asked what the PURPOSE is, not the MAIN POINT

i forget what the question was with sardonic and baffled, but he was sarcastically being "baffled".

See, Gianni. I WAS going to put that but then i realized it was talking about the PRIMARY purpose. While the passage was there for to correct a misconception, it had a more important purpose of informing the audience about history and its relevance to the future. So we have to take that into consideration. I'm not saying your opinion is entirely incorrect.
