As a musician, I was wondering if the atmosphere of GW and DC caters to that? Is there a prominent music scene (preferably rock) on or near campus? Is there a noticeable amount of students who are in bands or who like to attend concerts? I originally was drawn to NYC because of its hip and active vibe when it came to the local scene, especially in music, but I’m wondering if you could find something similar in DC or at GW.
I can’t compare my experiences at GW with NYC since I haven’t been, but I’ll fill you in on what I’ve experienced.
As far as a prominent music scene AT the school, I don’t think so. I mean, there are plenty of students that are into music (as evident by the university spending money on a sound-proof practice rooms at different locations on campus, and I think they’re even working on a recording studio). So, there ARE students that are really into music, I just didn’t see or hear a lot about it (although my freshman dorm suite mate had a class/private lessons with a famous classical guitarist).
Now, for OFF campus, D.C. is awesome. I know you said rock, but I found a multitude of blues venues close to campus. There were places in Georgetown, Adams Morgan, U Street, etc. I’m assuming that if blues can be so prevalent that there will be plenty of rock as well. In addition, D.C. gets a lot of groups coming to the city to play at the Verizon Center (downtown, metro accessible), RFK stadium (also metro accessible) Wolf Trap (outside the city in VA) and countless smaller venues throughout the city.
So there ya go. In a nut shell, I wouldn’t say that D.C. is a “music city” as much as it’s a cultural melting pot that has music, art, history, great food, and stuff like that. Hope this helps!
Thanks, that’s definitely helpful!!
