Washington dc?

Hey, I'm just wondering if DC is a good place for people who are into arts & music. Are there lots of concerts/music/art events? For the political scene, there's no question DC is the best. However I'm just wondering for artsy people like me.

DC has lots of art and music activities, everything from the Kennedy Center, Shakespeare Library, the museums and galleries. Check out the Sunday Washington Post to see if the arts life here is stuff you'd be interested in. There are lots of free performances and several vibrant theaters, great annual art and crafts shows, etc. Plus with all the colleges in the area I'm sure there would be a lot of events you might enjoy. Metro is pretty accessible to several venues, too.

My dad is artist and I grew up in a very artsy community in LA. Dc is definitely different, better in a lot of respects and worse in some too. Basically every major touring gallery comes through DC, huge names. The National Gallery is incredible. There are also a lot of smaller galleries that host fantastic big shows. Last weekend I went to the Ansel Adams, Georgia O'Keefe exhibit. So there is no prevalence of places to see very important work. Dc's local art scene is somewhat lacking, but that is possibly just relative to my own experience growing up surrounded by off mainstream art. As far as music, it has been great so far. I go to a lot of concerts at home and while there are certainly less small clubs here it has been a lot of fun. So far I have seen Girl Talk, Minus the Bear, Ben Folds ( for free :) ) and this week I am seeing the Mountain Goats. The two main small alt venues are the Black Cat and 9 30 clubs both great places to see a show. Bigger more mainstream bands play at the DAR Hall (yeah I thought that was strange at first too, but it's really nice) and then of course the Version Center. The scene is here you just have to put in the effort to find your niche.

Thank You soo much for the info guys! I'm really interested in Georgetown SFS (my second choice, obviously, after Brown :D)
