GWColonial or Fairytoes

Hi! Since I know that you two go to GW and know a lot about it, I was wondering if you could answer some of my questions.

Is the GW Hatchet a good school newspaper? If it is, is it hard for underclassmen to be involved in its production(not getting paid, however).

Everyone talks about how it's so easy to get internships, but I don't know if this is university propaganda or if it's really true. If I wanted a non-paying internship freshman year, could GWU's career services give me something interesting or something that looks good on a resume?

I also would like to know how easy it is to get MV classes. Can a student living on Foggy Bottom easily get a small class there?

Lastly, will I have to pay lots of fees on top of tuition. I have a slight learning disability, and have had a tutor in math/science classes since elementary school(I'm not retarded, I'm in AP classes and made a 1270 on the SAT). If I got a tutor at GW, would I have to pay a lot of money for that, and is this fairly common?

Thanks~

depends on what you consider "good". the hatchet is considered a good newspaper by most but it is not a daily newspaper, it comes out twice a week. i have mixed feelings about the hatchet...sometimes the opinion sections are very poorly written and sound like some middle schooler rambling on about teen angst and petty stuff like that... half the time there are articles with legit complaints about GW bureaucracy with points i agree with but could write about much more eloquently. u can read the hatchet urself at gwhatchet.com

the hatchet was recently honored with being the best nondaily (less competitive than daily) college newspaper by some big journalist ranking thing. (sorry, it was a while ago). it's definitely not hard for underclassmen to be involved, ppl graduate every year so u obviously need to keep recruiting to continue. i know a freshman who writes for the hatchet, but beware because once you join it apparently takes over your life. of course if you want to go into journalism/media, this would be great experience and it's all about meeting the deadlines.

internships- yes, they are fairly easy to obtain. why? because if gw has one thing, it's location. so take advantage of it and u shouldn't have any problems getting one. gw holds a a few career fairs, so def check those out. or better yet, ask other students who have internships, i don't have one at the moment cuz i already have another job on campus that satisfies me. look on gw's SMPA webpage-- under opportunities, a zillion internships, several impressive ones (tucker carlson, wolf blitzer, etc.) are listed.

about mount vernon...why would u want a class there? they may be smaller, but the whole shuttle bus thing is a pain in the butt. i tried NOT having a class on MV for spring semester, but my plan didn't quite succeed and i got stuck with one. when u register for classes, if u really want one at MV, it'll have a MV marked next to classes on mount vernon. so just sign up for one that way. inevitably u'll take at least a couple of classes there no matter what, since there's a shortage of classrooms on main campus.

about tutoring- i don't see how having a tutor in college will be any different from the process of getting tutored at home. ads for tutors are posted around campus, so u shouldn't have a problem finding one.

hope i gave u some helpful info--

How easy is it to do an internship? Time wise. Do most freshman have one?

Thanks so much Fairy toes!! I heart you.
