GWU Net Price Calculator (note for ED students)

Hey everybody,

I'm not sure if everyone knows this or not but [expensive] schools are now required to create Net Price Calculators by law. They factor in your financial information (GWU's is very involved) and spit you out an "estimated" award for financial aid.

Now the validity of this is probably more accurate than the "FAFSA 4caster" because it was created by GWU, but that does not mean it is completely accurate. So take it with a grain of salt, but i believe it's the closest reading you are going to get to Fin Aid.

Now for the ED applications. I saw a post that some people are concerned about applying ED because of financial aid. If you use this, it will give you a good idea of what kind of aid you could be looking out (it even breaks down grants, loans, fed aid). The Financial Aid Department said they do not take into consideration ED/EDII/RD when you are applying for Financial Aid (though merit aid is a completely different story). You will get the same amount either way.

Enjoy!

The same amount of need-based aid. But if you were hoping for merit aid in excess of need, I think ED will still reduce your chances.

Colleges and universities use merit awards to woo students whom they want, but who they think might go somewhere else unless the institution sweetens the pot. If you’ve applied ED, there’s no way you’re going someplace else, and therefore no need for a college or university to woo you.

You are completely right! It is still possible for you to get Merit aid, but it is, in my opinion, drastically decreased with ED. Though Financial Aid will stay the same and sometimes that’s what counts the most!

And, honestly, if you’re trying to use merit aid to reduce your family’s cost below your family’s ability to pay, then ED is a bad idea anyway. ED is for people who really love a particular college or university, not for people who are shopping for value.
