GWU or JHU a possibility?

Hey guys,

I have applied to both GWU and Johns Hopkins University for Fall 05, to study Biology. Currently I am a pre-med student at my local CC in Maryland.
I'm currently a intl student, but because I am transferring, I fall in this category. (I'm not applying for fin aid, btw)
I sent both college applications about 2 months ago, and ever since then I've had doubts about my chances.
I was wondering if you could please give me your opinion as to my chances, so that my doubts can get cleared up..

Oh, and 2 other things.
1. In my appl, I included copies of a presentation I made relating to Adenviruses (for Biology 101), and how they can fight cancer.
2. I've had experiences in my life where I was away from my parents for long periods of time, and how I made such sacrifices to reach my desired goal (to study biology). This was my theme of my essay. Do you think it will be successful?

You GPA is a 3.94 but you spelled receive wrong? Sometimes I just can't help but say something about this minor mistakes to people who claim such high stats.

According to what you say, it sounds like you have a shot.

I have some friends that have applied/attended both of those schools. All of them were majoring in someone related to foreign affairs or political science -- something like that (but I heard JHU is good for pre-med). Both of them are "big schools," but I'm wondering why you picked those two? Just looking for schools in the area?

Because you go to a community college, your SATs are actually very critical to the process. If you were a transfer from a top school, SATs are less relevant, but the less known the school, the more important they are. I would be much better able to let you know your chances with that info.

Also, my advice is to honestly look at other schools. JHU is a wonderful school, but it is no doubt a highly competitive weeder school with many many competitve pre-meds. Much of their high acceptance to med school is due to the fact so many students drop out because they realize they cannot handle it. One of my roommates went to JHU and we often joke how going there for pre-med is such a bad decision UNLESS you are truly a genius in which case its a great feeder into JHU med school. Of three pre med kids who went there for pre-med, ZERO are pre-med/ in med school now.

My advice is to shoot for a highly ranked but not pre-med focused cuttroat school. WUSTL, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, UVA are all similar schools that would make it easier for you to go to a better med school.

Thanks communist smurf and slipper1234 for your responses.
Sorry about the spelling mistakes btw.

Yeah, I personally want to stay in the MD/DC region. The reason for this is because I know some profs at both schools who are willing to have me on research projects if I am accepted to their schools. On a more minor note, I really like this region. I love the DC nightlife, and I really feel comfortable in such a region.

Both GWU and Hopkins do not require the SAT, ACT etc. This is only applicable to prospective students who've done 30+ credits. Both schools said that they don't look at SAT scores once you've done this amount of coursework. Since I went straight to a CC, the SAT wasn't required, so I didn't take it.

To tell you the truth, I don't plan to go to med school. I am more interested in going to grad school and eventually getting a Ph.D degree. When I go to a university, I'll change my major strictly to Biology or Biochem (without a pre-med concentration.)

One question though if you wouldn't mind helping me with.
Do you think I'll have any problems with getting accepted to either GWU, Hopkins, or both? The reason why I ask is because I personally want to go to GWU more.

Thanks in advance

SAT's are not really that important Slipper.

Yeah, I missed the fact that she had so many credits. That will solidify your record. The SAT does help though for community college applicants, and first year transfers.

I think you have a very strong chance for GWU and a decent chance at Hopkins.
