Hey guys. I'm currently a junior in highschool and I'm concerned if I would be accepted or not in GWU. I wasn't really interested in it at first but after doing the colonial insight program there I really want to go there. I'm planning on applying early decision.

Although I'm getting mostly all A's right now I really screwed up freshman year. I screwed up and got 2 D's some C's and some A's and B's. Sophmore year I got mostly A's and B's and like 2 C's. This year I got all A's, couple B's and one C in gym.

As for extracurricular I am in a cancer research club, enviromental club, help tutor and volunteer at the soup kitchen and veterans home. My guidence counsler told me my gpa was 3.6 unweigted and 3.9 weighted but I don't it's that high.

Also if I apply early decision would I get Enough financial aid. Curently my mom works and I'm concerned about finance. Could I get student loans for all four years?

I really want to get in GWU and just want to know what my chances are. Please tell me what you think.

Here’s the info I need:
Courseload-are you taking the hardest classes?
Grades-what subjects are your poor grades in specifically? Are you super strong in one area?
Test scores-SAT? PSAT? AP? ACT?
ECs-you listed them, but do you have any leadership positions?
Service-how many hours do you have?
Job-ever held one? If so, for how many hours and for what time period?
Summers-what have you done for your past few summers?
Recommendations-do you have close relationships with any of your teachers? If you don’t, get to work now.
Tuition-can you afford GW tuition? If you can’t, do you know if you can handle your EFC?

Coruses- currently im not taking any AP classes. Next year though i plan on taking Trig, Clac, AP Lit, AP Gov, and honors physics.

Grades- I did bad in history and im really really good in math.
Test Scores- PSAT: 1640
SAT: didnt offically take them but I’ve been taking practice SAT’s and i been getting like 1850’s. My goal is to get atleast a 1900 if not more. And I took PACT’s and got a 25 which isn’t that great.

EC’s- as for leadership im not president but i’m really active in them.
Service hours. I have about 120 hours
Job- I haven’t really had a job but i’m going to be working as a camp counselor this summer.

Tuition- I’m not really sure. GWU is very expensive. I talked to the admissions office member i know and he said if i get in early decision they would work with me in every way to make sure i can afford it. My parents want to pay with their retirement money but i plan on going through college through loans and financial aid. Possibly scholarships if i can get any. Also my parents will probably help me out with about half of it.

GWU will be a huge reach for you. Your 1850 SAT is within range, but it is at the bottom end. If you had a high GPA to counter it, that would be one thing, but unfortunately you do not. In addition, I’m not sure I would trust such a practice score unless it was an official CB test and you used scores in the middle of their estimated score predictor instead of the top of the range.
While I would not discourage you from applying, because you do certainly have chance, I would say your odds are very small.

I think that getting leadership positions in any of your extracurriculars could make up for what are admittedly kind of low statistics otherwise. You might also consider taking the ACT, sometimes people do a lot better on the ACT than they did on the SAT.

Good luck :)

Raiderade, think you can help me out since you know about GWU’s expectations. I have a 3.6 UW GPA out of 4.0. Scored a 32 on my ACT, haven’t taken the SAT yet. Also my dad went there.

I would think you would be a good candidate. Your GPA is a little low but if you took hard classes that should be fine especially since you have good test scores. What are your ECs like?

Do you think if I got higher Sats such as 1950 to 2050 I would be a better candidate?

At this point I think the best thing you could do would be to majorly bring up your GPA, if that’s even possible.

Im kind of in the same boat. I think that your senior year schedule will matter a lot. take those hard classes.

P.S. chance me back!

Honestly, getting a 1650 on the PSAT’s is not encouraging. I’m not sure why you’ve waited so long to take SAT’s, but with only mildly challenging courses and an okay GPA your chances of acceptance are small. I doubt EC’s could make up for your academics so with the two terms you have left before applying you should focus more on classes and testing. Also, you may qualify for financial aid, but not merit aid.

Will applying early decesion increase my chances?
