I’m currently a grad student at GWU’s math department and - OMFG - I hate my experience there. Most of other students in the program are Chinese who can barely speak English and most of the professors have bad reviews on ratemyprofessor and suck based on my experiences (I’ve only met two professors so far but I’m not looking forward to meeting the rest). I come from a small private liberal arts school in the NE so I’m really surprised by professors’ attitude, the quality of their teaching, and the quality of the student body. I feel like this program is not worth of my >45k but that’s the only master’s in math in the area. If you are a math major, please please please share who of the professors is nice, approachable, and a fair grader, based on your experiences.
I was a physics major, so I had my fair share of math at GW. I agree that the math department overall was quite frustrating. One professor (which I unfortunately had twice) was particular frustrating in his ability to teach. He was quite brilliant, sure, but lacked the ability to connect with the students, in my opinion. The other 2 professors I had were above average, maybe a 4/5: Gupta (Ordinary Differential Equations) and Musielak (Calc II &II). Apparently Prof. Musielak left in 2013 so that doesn’t help you too much, lol.
So in my opinion, if I were an aspiring math major I would probably choose somewhere other than GW unless I got a full ride or the majority of my expenses covered. That’s WAY too much money to be paying for what seemed like an average program. GW’s a great school but it’s not exactly known for its math department.
