So I'm a transfer student to Columbia (beginning in less than 20 days!) and am looking for opinions on the gym there. I'm very familiar with the campus, but haven't been able to check out the gym, so how is it/where is it? I think I remember someone telling me it is in Dodge but I may be making that up...Thanks!

yeah the dodge gymnasium - its underground. soo cool, but I hear its always packed

I've heard that people complain about it because it's small, but from my perspective it's perfectly fine. You can usually get a machine as long as you're a bit patient and are willing to walk down 2 flights of stairs. :P The top level is packed, the rest usually isn't so bad.

I never have a problem at the gym. go at slightly weird time, maybe afternoon or night, and you won't have a problem, morning too isn't that bad. Evening gets busy, but as hana said if the top level cardio machines are booked the bottom level ones are usually still accessible. you rarely have to wait more than 10-20 minutes for a machine - that's my experience, and with resistance machines you can just rotate in with someone else.

RCL: just so you know, there's a building called Dodge too. The gym is not in the basement of that building.

The gymnasium (conveniently called Dodge Fitness Center) is located in the north west of campus, by Havemeyer, and looks like a subway entrance of sorts.

Thanks everyone!

Cerberus-- oooohh hah I definitely thought it was in Dodge. I thought that seemed like a weird place to have the gym. So the gym is right next to Uris right? Like diagonal to mathematics and you walk towards the arch on the side of Uris and that leads to the gym?

Disclaimer: really tired sorry if that didn't make any sense..

Dude, when you get to campus and you're ready to work out for the first time, put on your gear, walk over to where you think it is (you already know the general vicinity of where it is), and if you still can't find it you can ask one of the thousand friendly students walking by to point it out for you. This isn't rocket science, and you don't need some NASA-quality map to find the stinkin' gym.

Yes it is. I had to triangulate its position via satellite in my sophomore year (that's when I realised I got phat).

You mean ask one of the really friendly students like you probably were.... really looking forward to that ;-)
