Everyone seen the new 7-course breadth requirement? I just realized the new one came out on assist and its kind of bad news for me. Its a lot more detailed as far as what specific classes meet the breadth requirement. So unlike Fall 08's which just says "class[es] in subjects such as.." it now specifically says what classes in your schools catalog meet that criteria.

For example for Physical Sciences it says: "Courses in the physical sciences such as astronomy,
chemistry, geology, geophysics, and physics, as well as a selection of courses
from related disciplines with some cross-listing. Courses that focus only on
computer skills do not qualify." But then under my schools courses that meet that criteria it only says: "G 10 The Earth Sciences (4)" I'm currently taking Chemistry 1 w/ Lab to meet this criteria but now im not sure if its going to meet the criteria for a Fall 09 application

For me that means if I don't get accepted in Fall 08 I'm going to have to take other classes just to meet the new criteria for when I apply again in '09. Now I need to contact Cal and see if they're see these and only these classes meet that criteria or if those classes are mentioned as guidelines. Anyone know anything about this?

The new articulation agreement has been out for quite a while. They changed it to the new 7-course breadth because it fits better for people who are trying to fulfill GEs for other schools in case they don't get into Haas. I did notice that it shows a list of courses that meet each requirement, but I think it's more of a pro than a con because before you simply had to take a course for a requirement and it was up to your discretion to find out if it meets the requirement or not. Also, I noticed I get a huge list of courses for each requirement for SMC, but little to none for a smaller school like LACC where I occasionally take some classes.

Btw, are you applying this fall? If so, you're lucky because you can still use the 9-breadth requirement up to this year.

Yeah I'm applying this fall. I'm just planning ahead to '09 if i don't get in this time. I'd seen the 7-course plan on Cal's site but my school's articulation agreement hadn't been posted yet. What's surprising me the most is that my school has such a small number of courses listed. That Earth Sciences class I posted is the only one Cal listed for Physical Sciences in my school's agreement. I can still meet the requirements, I would have enough time to take those courses, but I just figured I'd be done with Cal's requirements regardless of what happened to my application this fall. Oh Well.

Keep in mind that the list of courses in the articulation agreement are only a few of the courses you can take to fulfill the requirement. For example, under Historical Studies at SMC it lists Western Art History II, but I'm taking Art History II at LACC (which isn't listed in the articulation agreement) instead which should fulfill the requirement as well because they're virtually the same class. I'm just guessing that the bigger schools will have a larger list of courses, but again that doesn't mean that it's the only courses you can take to full the requirement.

Btw, are you really planning on staying another year to apply again if you don't get in? What other schools are you applying to?

Well the thing is I want to either get in Bus Admin at Cal or Biz Econ at UCLA. For UCLA though I'm going to need another calculus class that I wont be able to complete by this Spring. So this fall I'm only applying to Cal because I can meet its requirements by Spring 09. If I don't get in, I'll be applying to both Cal -again, UCSD and UCLA in Fall '09. I pretty much need that last Calculus to apply for econ at any UC school.
