Hi everyone,

I just finished my freshman year at Cal and I'm a prospective Haas applicant looking for some feedback...

I didn't have such a great 2nd semester and I ended up getting a B in Econ1 and a C+ in Stat21. I don't need to take the RC or Math requirement because of AP credit, and I have yet to take UGBA10 or the new english writing requirement. My current GPA is a 3.568.

I wanted to know how bad/good my chances are now that I basically bombed two of my most important prereqs. I know I can do better next semester, but I feel like I shouldn't even take UGBA10 or the writing req. next semester because I'm probably not going to get in if I applied.

Is my prerequisite GPA too low now to be competitive amongst other candidates?
My extracurriculars aren't amazing- I'm in one club; it's a business club and I hold an officer position. I'll probably get more involved next semester.

Thanks in advance for all the help. & be brutal, it would be great if I could get some honest opinions.

Honestly, you stand a chance.
Not a very good one, but still, a chance.

If you think about it, a few hundred students get admitted to Haas every year, and there are only a few dozen business leadership positions on campus, and ever fewer of those are held by pre-Haas students. Your grades are seriously the weakest part of your application. Really weak. Look at it from the application-reader’s perspective… you want to go into Haas, yet you could only get a B in the most basic econ course? I know Haas restricts it to like, 10-15% A’s, but still, not even a B+? And that C in stats just shows that you don’t seem prepared for the math involved in Haas. A 3.6 GPA is respectable, not good, but respectable. They’re not going to just throw out your app because of a low GPA, but if you don’t make up for it in some other way, it won’t turn out so well.

BUT… If you seriously rock UGBA 10, your chances would go up, a lot. A whole lot.
Haas is made up of all UGBA classes, so if you rock the first one, it shows that you’re ready to tackle it. =]

No one knows for sure if you’re going to make it or not, there are too many factors involved so it doesn’t hurt to try

I don’t know if there is much you can do at this point given that you will be applying in the Fall and you won’t really have Fall semester grades to boost that GPA. However if you have an internship during the summer or are doing something really unique and interesting like helping children in Africa get access to potable water or something or maybe summer school to boost that GPA, those activities can really help you.

Other than that maybe, some other extracurricular stuff in the beginning of fall and really good and compelling essays would help.

Woah, you should not have taken Stats in freshman year. It’s commonly saved till the last semester before junior year. You really need to make it up with killer essays and extracurriculars. You have to fight harder than those with 3.8s and 3.9s. No one can tell you “yes” or “no” right now. CC isn’t the admissions committee for Haas. But if I were you, I would seriously invest in a back-up major. Try to get straight A’s this fall semester. UGBA10 shouldn’t be a hard A if you are really good at memorizing information. You need to prove yourself harder outside of grades to make up for that Stats grade.

This is kind of off topic but WHY did Haas only admit about 270 people this year? It says usually the undergraduate class is 350, and last year they accepted somewhere around 300. Was it because people weren’t qualified, or was it because they just wanted to keep the 50% acceptance rate (since only like 550 people applied this year)?

Anyways back to the topic (kind of)
What about taking stats21 spring of freshman year, if we got a 5 on the AP Stats exam already? Does it depend on the teacher or is the class just hard no matter what?
