Hi, i am a high school junior i a well known private catholic school in NY known for how tough it is, and also everyone is in all honors classes. I was wondering if college admissions for schools will notice my upward trend in grades.(not 100% sure where i want to go yet because i don’t know where i am eligible)
My GPAs are out of 100:
Freshman year: 84-85
Sophomore year: 90
Junior Year: 94
I am part of the culinary and spanish clubs and am becoming a member of NHS this year
I also volunteer weekly with special needs skids for 5+ hours at a horse barn
i am just wondering if colleges will take into account my upwards trend. and also what colleges do you think i should be looking at, or where i have a chance of getting in? also what could my reach schools be?
Colleges almost always take in account upward trend. Also if you have some personal reason why one particular year was bad for you, there is usually an additional comments section to explain. Without knowing standardized test scores and the rigor of your classes (any APs classes if your school has them, or how many honors your specifically taking) it’s hard to recommend places for you though generally speaking straight As set you up for good admittance anywhere except for the top of the top.
my school only offers one track which is ALL honors they say, and i took the ACT yesterday and felt good about it, and am taking the SAT on may 2nd. In total I have 7 classes a year all honors. and my personal reason was i was very heavily effected by superstorm sandy and was out of my house for over a year and had economic difficulties up to very recently that i had to help out with, I’m not sure if thats a reason though.
What school do you go to? I can assure you, you don’t even go to the toughest catholic school in the city, let alone NY because that school doesn’t use number grades or have NHS. If you’re struggling to get high grades wherever it is you go, it does not bode well for your admissions chances. Right now your cumulative GPA looks something like an 89, which will make it tough already at top 20 schools. Beyond that, you have 3 extracurricular activities at the end of your junior year, all of which are very plain and won’t make you stand out. Try to join some clubs that interest you, now. It’s better late than never. It’s hard to chance without test scores, but you would probably have good chances @ Fordham, SUNY schools, etc. As possible reach/matches you could apply to the UC system because they ignore freshman year and look favorably on high test scores if you can get those. Good luck!
I know i don’t go to the toughest catholic school in NY, i was just wondering if college admissions will actually take into account i have an upward trend and not just look at my 3 year avg. also because i didn’t really have a choice of my classes will i be “penalized” by that because i did take the hardest class i could, because there is only one track. And i am not looking at top 20 colleges because i know that i don’t stand a chance at those. I mean yea i have dream school but i most likely won’t get into them so thats why i am asking for suggestions (also wanna get out of NY)
