I agree with Blue Groton is definately IN

I think HADES is the perfect acronym. It is a pun and definitely describes the top 5 schools. The entire point the word is because it means hell. It is a joke.

Yes,Yes. I know my greek mythology. Although it doesn’t literally mean hell but whatever, I get the point. I didn’t miss the pun. However, I think it gives people who aren’t familiar with the schools a false impression that HADES is better than all other 1st tier schools. It makes kids think that HADES are the only really good schools. I know it affected me when I first started posting. In fact I almost didn’t apply to Groton after I started posting here and it was all HADES,HADES,HADES. Which is really stupid because Groton is as good academically as any HADES school if not slightly better than some of them.

We’re better off without an acronym like this, but if we have to have one representing the top 5 BS’s, GADES is better than HADES.

how about we make it “GHADES” pretty funky sounding, isn’t it?

GADES AND GHADES are not the point of the acronym. It was supposed to be 5 great schools with the joke of “hell”. I dont think it was meant to start this entire discussion!

haha, it probably wasn’t. I like acronyms, though. They’re pretty sick.

i say hotchkiss?-> why hk? to me it definitely not on the same level as the rest of hades. maybe a bit below but not on the same level.

^thems not be fightin’ words…

Hotchkiss is definitely on the same level. The acceptance rate was lower than Exeter’s if you want to get into statistics. Though that is not saying Groton isnt on the same level as well. Groton isnt in the 10 schools admission organization, which puts some people off. Choate isnt the same caliber and neither are Lawrenceville or Middlesex or Milton. They just arent. When you say Choate or when you say Middlesex, they know what Choate is not Middlesex.

I think HADES is the best acronym. But has anybody noticed that on this board, there is a lot more focus on Andover, Exeter, Deerfield, Hotchkiss, St. Paul’s than there is on other schools of the same caliber?
hadeswisher, if you want to get into statistics, Lawrenceville’s matriculation is better than Hotchkiss’s, Choate’s is nearly similar to Hotchkiss’s. Just to say that Lawrenceville and Choate IS on the same caliber, but HADES certainly sounds cooler than LADES and CADES, doesn’t it?

I found an old post from skibum4 about “HADES.”

It’s clear that HADES is not an exclusive group, nor is it the “top five”. It’s just an acronym that gives too many false notions.

The post was from: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/prep-school-admissions/717968-hotchkiss-vs-lawrenceville-vs-choate.html

I got asked about why on CC we obsessed over HADES by a relativly new CCer and I responded; I thought imight post it here, just my opinion.

HADES symbolise (but are certainly not represtitave of all the top tier) the top tier school with the lowest acceptance rates, best college placement, intense academic rigor w/ college classes avaliable and great endowements. They seek the brightest kids who can also play sport generally and are nice kids. Getting into one is a crap shot. I didn’t apply to Andover or Exeter which are much obsessed over here. I visited Andover and it was a fine school with AMAZING academics but it was to big and didn’t ‘feel’ right to me. I applied to Hotchkiss, (the H in HADES) Deerfield (the D), SPS (the S) and Groton which is assuradely top tier and is arguably better than many top tier academically and on par with HADES but because of its 300ish size and the fact it isn’t in TSAO(10 schools assosiation) it is often overlooked. As humans we like to rank stuff and think we are applying to the best but really you can only look at the statistics get the vibe and see what school you like and what school wants you.

excuse me? milton’s definitely on the same level as the “hades” schools. and i dont say that just cause i go there…our academics are just as strong as andover & exeter.we have great extracurriculars. amazing dance program. we have a VERY strong english & history program. actually all our programs are great

After researching and being accepted into the top 5 school, I feel all the top 20 schools seem to be on the same level. H A D A S seems to be misguiding parents and students on this form CC. We are starting to realize there are so many similar or better schools other then few schools.

Just promoting the top 5 school as the best schools is in-correct and is misguiding and is being misunderstood by everyone.

Maybe we should identify and come up with ‘25BESTBS - 2010’ list for each year, which can be modified each year

‘25BESTBS - 2010’ are=

St. Paul; Choate; Hotchkiss; Westminister; Lawrenceville;

Taft; Deerfield; Westover ; Andover; George Town Prep

Thacher; Groton; St. George; St. Marks ; Concord Academy;

Middlesex; Governor’s ; Canterburry ; Miss Proter’s ; Loomis Chaffee

Cate ; Peddie ; Milton ; Exeter ; St Andrews DE

The above is not listed in any order or rank. Trying to attend just 25 BEST BS SCHOOLS FOR YEAR 2010 ADMISSION

^ where did westover or canterbury come from…

i don’t see why milton or middlesex or choate or l’ville aren’t of the same calibre as hkiss, but in the end it’s all a matter of opinion.

I like the HADES acronym as a joke but people on CC take it to seriously. Plus it misleads people who don’t jnow much about BS. CC put me offf Groton, I almost didn’t apply because of CC. I visited though and loved it…

Are all of the “25 Best” on the East Coast?

Cate and Thacher aren’t. I disagree with that list but not going to get into the discussion.

Parent15 - actually no - all the “best” schools aren’t on the East Coast. Just some have been around for centuries and after a while - they build a reputation on sheer numbers of alum.

The “best” school is the one that fits your child.

Well said ExieMITAlum.
