Is Lawrenceville on par with the HADES schools? How does it differ from them? Any other info about L'ville is greatly appreciated.

HADES are generally ranked higher and more prestigious, however Lville has an awesome campus and culture. The house system also really adds to the experience.

L’ville is (sort of) newer than a lot of the HADES. It’s also not located in NE, which is a big reason it’s not included. It’s probably on par considering academics and athletics, but it doesn’t typically compete against them. L’ville is, however, a part of the GLADCHEMMS acronym and is certainly a fine, top tier school.

There are many schools in the States that would have had the same level of brand name and recognition had they been located in New England. L’ville is one of them.

PMFJI, but ‘HADES’ is a stupid acronym that some teenager on CC came up w several years ago. It is not some formal school association, like the Ten Schools Admissions Organization, St. Grottlesex, Founders League, or Mid-Atlantic Prep League.

IMHO, if you want to base a major life decision on the basis of a silly collection of initials that some teenager cobbled together, like OMG, WT.F then, LOL, be my guest.

WRT to the age of schools, Lville is nearly half a century older than SPS, and nearly a century older than Hotchkiss. AFAIK, Lville does compete athletically w some of the top New England schools, including Exeter & Deerfield.

XOXO

GMT, PMFJI? Puhleeese!!??
(OP, you had me hooked from the subject line) ~O)

Some of the data that I have collected last year… (A glaring omission, Deerfield! Sorry but we weren’t that into DA.)

School Name | Andover | Exeter | SPS | Choate | Hotchkiss | Lawrenceville
Acceptance rate | 13 | 20 | 18 | 19 | 18 | 20
Avg. SSAT percentile | 94 | 94 | 89 | 85 | 87 | 84
Avg. SAT score | 2076 | 2097 | 2014 | 2018 | 2013 | 2095
HYP% | 10 | 8 | 9 | N/A | N/A | 10
Ivy% | 28 | 19 | 22 | N/A | N/A | 22
No. of students | 1106 | 1063 | 536 | 864 | 594 | 813
% boarding | 74 | 80 | 100 | 74 | 93 | 67
Campus size | 500 | 619 | 2000 | 458 | 810 | 700

Endowment (in $M) | 800 | 992 | 433 | 283 | 362 | 320

I have highlighted where things are quite different for Lville in bold face figures…

Acadmics: Lville is as good as any others. In fact, its recruited students have lower SSAT percentile (84) compared to HADES but their SAT scores are one of the highest of all BSs. This is something that I’ve pointed out in [another thread.](<a href=“http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/prep-school-admissions/1550335-ssat-to-sat-p1.html"]another”>SSAT-to-SAT - Prep School Admissions - College Confidential Forums) Incidentally, Lville has the highest percentage of faculty having advanced degrees.

College matriculation: As good as any HADES.

Day students: Lower than any HADES.

Endowment: Smaller than HADES, one of the reasons why it’s most expensive schools. This might give an impression that the school is populated with rich and powerful families, but this is not any different from HADES and there are many, many kids who are from middle class, especially among day students. I missed %student on FA here, but that figures are more or less the same across all compared schools (30-35%), except Andover and Exeter (40-45%).

Hope this helps!

GMT, so many acronyms in your post…:D

Thanks!
So informative, thanks a lot! @SharingGift

should read: Day students: Higher than any HADES.

Where did you get this? For a particular year, or for multiple years?

Sunshinegirl17, Lawrenceville is a leading boarding school. Period, the end, that’s all folks.

@Benley, I went to individual school websites, added up available numbers, and divided them by the size of graduating class and the number of years. They typically cover 4-5 years.

Why, anything unusual?

I was just curious about your source. Thought you’d just take what’s on matriculation.org as ballpark, but it’s just as good if you have done your own calculation (first time I’ve seen HYP alone…). Anyway, this is purely a “technical question”. For OP’s question, I agree it’s a top school.

It took me a couple of hours to do that for about 20 schools we initially considered. I calculated for %Ivy, %HYPSM and % HYP. The latter two weren’t that different since we were only interested in EC schools and MIT wasn’t that popular among BSs. For a smaller number of schools, I also calculated % for top 20 universities and top 20 LAC.

Now that fun part of data mining is all done, we would have to rely on “feeling” and “gut.” OP, I think research/data are useful before application, and now is the time to follow your heart. Revisit would definitely help.

Yes, I agree! I’m just waiting for revisit day. Thanks again.

L’ville is a great school. A good friend teaches there. We noticed ‘cultural’ differences versus the NE preps (less preppy, different feel, 6th form isn’t the same as 6th form elsewhere, etc) … They’ve got lots of strengths and I’d clearly count them academically and overall in the top ranks of BS.

I fear that the illustrious Mid-Atlantic schools will have a hard time with “branding” vs. the New England schools, when the best acronym I can come up with for Peddie, Hill, Lawrenceville, Episcopal, Georgetown Prep, Mercersburg and St. Andrews is:

PHLEGMS

I would be very scared if any school came to CC for branding tips.

To those who’ve been admitted to L’ville, what are the tuition and fees for 14-15? I don’t think they have been posted yet like some other schools but they should’ve been set and sent to families of admitted students.
