Hair washing frequency

I’m curious how often you wash your hair. Throughout my adult life, I’ve usually showered daily and washed my hair in the shower. I know this tendency can vary culturally and ethnically and also based on hair type. But I’ve been reading about women that wash their hair once or twice a week and I’m so surprised.

I’m white with straight, fine, thin, chin- to collar-length hair. I wash it nearly every day because it helps me style it and otherwise my scalp starts to itch and I would have product build-up. It’s not greasy on the 2nd day, but doesn’t feel clean, either. And if I’m in the shower and my hair is getting wet, why not wash and condition it?

What’s your hair washing routine?

I shower often…but if I washed my hair every time, it would just dry out. I do that about every 5 days. I don’t use any “hair product” so there is none to build up.

Me too. I probably wash mine 2x a week.

For most of my life (since teen years), I washed my hair pretty much every time I showered, so at least once a day. My hair started thinning several years ago, and I’ve started washing it only every 2-3 days. I also used a blow dryer every day for decades, and I only do that now when I need to dry it quickly.

Mostly everyday. Sometimes I get away with skipping a day if I wake up and decide my hair still looks good.

2-3 times per week. It’s dry and doesn’t really look dirty/greasy even if I go 3-4, maybe even 5 days (though looks better clean) and needs a lot of conditioner plus blow drying to look decent and I just don’t have the time or patience most mornings. I wear a shower cap the days I don’t wash it or you can just pin it up if it’s long enough.

I’ve read about using a boar’s hair brush. Other than a round brush for styling, I don’t usually brush my hair (it’s thin, fine, shortish and straight and doesn’t really tangle). So maybe that would help me lengthen the days between washings.

About every 5-7 days! Have pretty thick, longish hair. It’s never been oily, though - and in recent years have had to pile on moisturizing leave-in conditioners, etc.

MIMomma - I think brushing does distribute the oils and helps. I’ve also used dry shampoo when it’s a day or two longer between washes than usual, lol.

Usually every third day. I don’t use any products (except shampoo and conditioner) and never blow dry it. I usually just brush it and let it dry in place. I have curly hair so this works for me.

Every three or four days. I have thick curly hair. Out of control most of the time.

Every single day since jr. high and don’t see that changing.

When I am training for a race, I wash it every day or even twice a day(pre-work and post-run), otherwise I average once a day occasionally 2 days.

Usually every 2 days in the winter and daily in the summer. I don’t use any special products on my hair and it isn’t treated in any way.

I have gone from every day to every other and now only need to was twice a week. My hair is thick and wavy ( not in a good way) so it needs to be blown dry.

I wash mine daily. Have curly hair. Have to use anti-frizz stuff in it. I only comb it when it’s wet. Otherwise, I look like a frizzy poodle.

I have straight thick hair and normally wash my hair about once/week. No conditioner nor hair products needed.

Every day. I don’t like the feeling of unwashed hair.

I’ve stood on a lot of risers with a lot of women (for choral concerts) and I know first hand that hair can look fabulous and smell awful, as in not clean.

Usually every 2 or 3 days. It’s one of the reasons that I typically don’t run every day.

From the time I was 13 or 14 years old, I washed my hair every day. I have very fine, but THICK and super curly hair I almost always blew it dry. About 5 years ago, I went cold turkey. Now I wash my hair every 5 or 6 days. Rarely I use dry shampoo one the last day before I wash it. I still use a blow dryer when I do wash it.

My hair is in MUCH better condition now than it use to be. Far fewer split ends, and on the occasion that I do let it dry curly, the curls are also more defined/less frizzy.

Even better than the condition of my hair: I have an extra 3 hours (at least) available every week. Over the course of a year, that’s an extra 10 days (calculating the saved time as awake time only) added to my life! I can’t believe how much time I wasted messing with my stupid hair.

Every other day for me.
