so i've been informed--atleast for girls--that the smart thing to do is to get your hair cut before IDAY. i'll be taking that advice! any suggestions on length (i know the standard is 2 in. above the colar), style, etc. let me know!!

go at least to the chin, but they may trim it up shorter anyway. Don't get a cut that requires any upkeep(blow drying, curling irons, flat irons), there won't be time during Plebe Summer

Blunt cut to the chin, but long enough to pull back in an elastic band. During plebe year you can visit WAVES on the Yard for deep conditioning, braids, etc. Prior to I-day, many female appointees have their hair cut at their local salon and donate it to "Locks of Love." My daughter's hair was half-way down her back, so she had it cut before she left (stylist's brother was a former Navy SEAL). Therefore, her hair wasn't cut again on I-Day. You can start growing it out again after plebe summer.

If you'll read on Page 9 of the booklet "Important Information for the Class of 2011" that came in your PTR packet, it tells you exactly how your hair should be when you report. It really is a great little booklet, and all incoming Plebes ought to read it/understand it thoroughly. Between that and cruising through a copy of "Brief Points", my guess is that you'll have all the information you need to have a successful start to your summer. See you there...in just another 11 days!

As a female midshipman, I highly recommend getting your hair cut before you report for plebe summer. As a simple rule of thumb, if you put on a collared shirt, your hair cannot touch it. That being said, you will go for a hair cut three times over plebe summer. If your hair is always above that collar, you won't have to get it cut. I recommend getting it cut short enough that for the following eight weeks your daughter's hair stays far enough above the collar they won't have to touch it. They're working with very limited time down in the barbershop and I wouldn't want to have to worry about them cutting my hair.

What other people said is good. You cannot use any headbands, bobby pins, clips, or pony tail holders during plebe summer. You will literally jump out of bed and have 30 seconds to be outside in the hall, so you can't do anything to fix your hair. You won't be using hair products either (no hair spray, gel, etc). The simplest, easy to wash and take care of hair cut is the best. If you have any other specific questions, feel free to send me a message, because we've all been there before.

Girls...cut your hair SHORT. What's the big deal? It will grow back. Short is no muss, no fuss. With all that you will be doing, you do NOT have time to consider your hair. Cut it! That is all.

I remember back in my day seeing the absolute BUTCHER JOBS done by the barbers to females. It was AWFUL. I can't even describe it. One classmate of mine wasn't able to fix the damage until she went home for Christmas leave. I don't know what her personal stylist did to fix it, but it was a miracle.

What do they expect you to use? My hair will constantly be in my face. I recall reading somewhere that we can use two regulation barettes. Is this true? If so, does it help? And also, did you bring any toiletries (i.e. shampoo & conditioner) or did you rely on the Navy issued products? Thank you in advance!

re: Shampoo and conditioner: suggest using a combination product (shampoo with conditioner) for plebe summer.... you won't have time for both! As for toiletries.... just bring enough to "get you started".... sample sizes for most stuff and a small bottle of the combo suggested above.... the regular sized resupplies can be sent in a care package (flat rate boxes work best as this stuff can be heavy)....

KRISTINAAA.. I re-read the Permit to Report info Packet last night for my daughter.. it Definitely says TWO BROWN BARETTES are A-OK:) Also, we understand from a current female mid that depending on your company you may be able to wear rubberband for small ponytail as the summer progresses.

I said no hair clips only because I know we were not allowed to, and as a cadre member this summer I know some companies won't. I personally have naturally curly hair and it was big and all over the place. You learn to deal with it. It won't look nice or be fashionable, but it's plebe summer, nothing looks nice. :) Regardless of what any packet said, many cadre will have their own rules and hair is not something you will have a lot of control over.

You will be issued a combination shampoo/conditioner that works just fine. If you prefer something else, have your parents send it- you have enough to carry and deal with on I-Day. Remember, you will have minutes to shower, and not time to do anything with your hair other than get it clean and get out. You can bring the clips and things just in case, but be prepared to not use any of it.
