half asian/half hispanic

does that even help me at all? and what if i received national hispanic scholar finalist ? do those awards count?

A friend of ours was a National Hispanic Scholar. He’s going to Auburn almost free. He was not a genius, but a good student, good ECs. A super guy. He really loves Auburn. He’s studying MechEng and having no trouble at all. He is an OOS student, so it’s a really great deal. Check out the schools that offer tuition waivers for NMs. Some may also apply to Nat Hisp Scholars as well.

A really good student from this year who was a Nat Hisp Scholar got into Hopkins, Cornell, Duke, Rice, bunch of other top notch schools that nobody down here gets into, but he’s going to Tulane, which is actually accepting lots of LA kids now.

^thanks for the info. anymore ideas?

lol Congratz. You have the opportunity to mark “Other” for the dreaded Race box. In terms of helping, lets think of it this way: Marking Asian will hurt you. So it certainly cant hurt you.

don’t mark asian. mark hispanic.

haha. the thing is, i have an asian last name. chen. should i still mark hispanic?

yes, 10 char.

Make your parents divorce, ask to have full custody with your mom, shun dad, then you get the Hispanic last name. :D

^haha, i wish i could

Why does Asian hurt you? Isn’t that a minority as well? Do colleges discriminate based on what minority you are?

yes. asians are much more competitive than any other race except perhaps white. i would still mark hispanic for the race box. if u are concerned about the last name you can consider putting half azn/half hispanic as well but i dont think i would.

bumping this up. sorry for bumping this up, but does anyone have an answer as to whether putting hispanic + the national merit hispanic scholar and having an asian last name will help me at all ? i just know that putting asian will hurt me, but in my case, do i get a boost at all? i mean, technically i could just have a step father whose name i ended up taking…
