@merc81, You’ll need to show me where it says that 107 of the 647 applicants were Questbridge or Posse.
That figure (102) can be inferred through the premise that QuestBridge and Posse applicants are accepted at the same rate as conventional ED1 applicants. In the absence of other information, I chose this assumption as the basis for the math. However, under a different assumption, the result would be different, @Chembiodad. (Also see reply #75.)
Agree if the same. While the Questbridge ED acceptance rate is about 15%, the combined ED and RD Acceptance Rate for all Finalists is 48%. I think Posse is an actual match at ED. Am sure others can shed more light.
In case anyone has been paying close attention, I should change a sentence from reply #79: “If equivalent proportions are adhered to, then 102 applicants (the entirety of the estimated QuestBridge/Posse component) would be excluded from the applicant pool.”
Best of luck to all ED II and RD applicants!
Here is a link to Hamilton’s Admission page. Under the Early Decision section, it clearly states in bold and underlined that a January admission is a possibility. It then adds that the Jan admits are released from a binding decision. The January aspect of an application adds a level of decisions to an already stressful time, but please do not blame Hamilton while saying that they tried to hide this information on their webpage.

I have a Senior who has mentioned Jans over the last 3 years. I never got the impression that they were considered “less than” in any way. The kids at Hamilton are so kind. They are really, really kind. I do think that they make an effort to welcome Jans to campus.
Good luck to all of your Seniors!
@bwaygirl1, agree as our DD’s are only Frosh’s and they and their Hamilton friends spoke fondly over winter break about the Jan’s that would be joining them in January. They got to know the Jan’s during the August Freshman Orientation trips which purposely include students that will be in your dorm, including Jan’s, as well as others such as teammates, in the case of our student-athlete DD. One of our DD’s has three Jan’s, out of 40, in her dorm, so a meaningful addition to her dorm crew.
We have also found that Hamilton students are a great combination of really smart and really kind - am not saying it is unique as this is the only experience we have, but we do know that it is special.
Best wishes in your DD’s Senior year on the Hill!
We knew that a Jan start date was a possibly, but we never actually thought it would happen. We thought he’d either get in as a Fall admit or be deferred or denied. The Jan start was never a consideration. It’s been a month now since ED1 decisions went out, and my son is mostly likely going to end up at Hamilton. The London program is very appealing to him and he reached out to a current student who was a Jan who provided him with lots of good information. Hamilton provides the names and email addresses of these students on its website so Jan admits can speak with them. He’s applied to three other schools, but Hamilton is the best fit for him. IMO, he’s gotten over the “Jan thing” and is ready to embrace it.
@bwaygirl1 I appreciate your comment above. At first, my son was concerned that he “half got in” or that there would be some sort of stigma attached to being a Jan. He now sees that he was admitted to a very selective college regardless of when he starts and that students are not going to care about his start date!
Best wishes to all the DD’s and S’s out there!
I’ve always wondered if Jan. admits end up feeling like they’ve missed out on a bit of the social scene-kind of like coming into a movie 5 minutes in. You may not have missed anything important but you spend the rest of the movie wondering if you did.
@Sue22, that feels that like a glass half empty view, so I hope most students don’t view life that way as we all know it’s a long and uncertain trail.
I think @123France 's son handled it the right way in reaching out to a Jan as I think student insight is honest - I am sure he shared the up’s and down’s, as there have to be some of both.
@bwaygirl1 You are entirely correct on all fronts.
I did not see the link under the Early Decision heading, since I know what ED is I did not read that paragraph. But that was my mistake, not Hamiltons.
I wish there was a way for me to retract all my comments regarding this topic, but I don’t think there is. I fired off all hot headed and self-righteous and now see that both my tone and the content of what I said was wrong. Again I apologize to all I have hurt directly and in-directly.
Luckily D does not have my temper and is super measured in her emotions!
I spoke with our counselor and he said that these mid year admits occur at many schools - and some disclose it and for some its a very informal thing and they don’t publicize it at all. (Which puts Hamilton on the side of being more forthright than many). I just feel so naive and thick, I had no idea. I feel like someone just told me there’s no Santa Claus…
@4junior, yes, its an incredibly stressful time - glad to her that your DD is hanging in there so well. Best wishes to her as she sounds like a great fit for Hamilton!
I can’t remember, did she submit ED II or RD?
Regarding the numbers and percents and formulas of ED1 admits and Questbridge and Posse I will confess that as a totally non math oriented person I am in the woods on all the calculations.
But on a larger level I wonder if we are missing the forest from the trees here. I guess if you are trying to use the jump in ED1 applicants to justify how ‘hot’ Hamilton is this is a very worthy calculation.
But as an applicant (or parent of one) it does not really matter, yes? I am under the impression that the total number of admitted students for the year will be about the same - they will not add 25 more seats because of the Questbridge kids. So, whether the additional applicants were Questbridge, Posse or just plain Hamilton lovers there are still more people applying for the same number of seats. I could be missing something here though…
@Chembiodad ED2. I have to say I am glad D is an only child cause I am not sure I could go through this again!
Thanks for you kind words.
@4junior, agree, as all we know at this point are;
- the overall Application Rate increased by 10%,
- the ED I Acceptance Rate decreased by 15 bps, from 44% to 29%,
- the Combined ED I and ED II Acceptance Rate will decrease by more than 15 bps,
- and the overall Acceptance Rate will decrease by at least 2 bps, from 24% to 22% (and more if yield increases - if yield increases from 35% to 40%, then Acceptance Rate decreases to 19.3%).
I think I got that right.
@4junior, fingers crossed!
@Chembiodad, just my musings and not IMO a reason to turn down an offer at a fabulous school. I’m sure the January admits will have a wonderful 4 years at Hamilton and they deserve the same congratulations as the fall admits.
@Sue22, Agree! Our youngest DD is a punster, so we get to have fun exploiting the different meanings of words all the time.
@4junior I’ll speak for myself…I was not offended by any of your posts. It’s a terribly stressful time and as parents, we want to see our kids happy. It hurts us to see them upset when they don’t get admitted to the school they really had their heart set on. I have three sons and this son is my youngest. The other two were easy: #1 applied ED1 to his father’s alma mater and was accepted. He was a big legacy; father and two uncles. #2 wanted to go to school in the South and decided to apply to colleges very much within his range, i.e., GPA, test scores. He did not apply to a reach because he fell in love with the first college we visited. He was awarded a HUGE merit scholarship that we didn’t even apply for so that made the decision much easier. #3 was a bit more complicated. He really liked Hamilton but had ACT scores below the Hamilton range. He is also completely unhooked. No “merit scholarship” either.
@123France, just wanted to make sure you know that Hamilton doesn’t provide any Merit Scholarships - they stopped doing so in the 2008 in order to continue to grow Need Based aid.
