I applied to Hamilton ED yesterday. Did anybody else ?

My son did. Anxious for December 12th.

I did…so nervous

I did! Officially applied on October 1st. I’ve been really anxious about the decision but it’s a perfect school for me! I visited it over Spring Break last year and absolutely fell in love. I had my alumni interview 2 weeks ago. I’m from Minnesota btw.

For those applying ED - D applied to a different school ED1 and got deferred - worst day ever. Applied to Hamilton ED2 and got in. Set the keyboard on fire sending in her deposit. Now a happy freshman.

Parents, you want to be there when your kids opens the email - good or bad. Bad - your kid is going to need you; Good, it’s the best thing ever and your kid is going to want to share and you may yell and scream with them. Plus, it’s over - you’re done with the process!

Oh I’ll be there MrMom : ) . Btw, when they say December 12, do they mean 12:01?

No, it’s usually sometime in the evening. I think they usually start rolling them out between 6 and 7 PM ET. Check last year’s ED thread to see when the first reports start getting posted.

I applied ED as well. I’m kind of hoping they select me for the Jans program because I’d definitely be interested in spending my first semester overseas. I know that most people who get that option aren’t thinking about it in advance and some don’t want to wait till January to start college, but I’m curious if anyone knows what the profile for a Jan admit looks like or whether it would be worth letting Hamilton know that I’d be interested in the possibility.

there was a section to put on preferred beginning- Fall or January- on the common app I believe.

I know, but it seemed like last year a lot of people got pushed into it who didn’t initially indicate it (based on comments on this board). There are a lot of news articles about it too. It seems like most people are opted-in by Hamilton, not the reverse. I didn’t indicate a January start on my application, but belatedly decided that would be something I’d be excited about if the option presents itself. Frankly, I’ll be thrilled no matter what if I get an offer. I should be that lucky!

@nnms728 : Consider letting the College know. I think Hamilton would ideally fill the January admit openings with the students most enthusiastic about starting their education abroad. It’s win-win. Just briefly explain that as you had time to think about the program it became particularly appealing to you. If you can tie that in with your educational goals in general, even better.

@nnms728 unless you indicate that you want to be considered for the jan program, how would they know that you would want to do it and study abroad first? I don’t think they just push admits into the January program…

The offer of January admission, at least for applicants who do not request it, is designed for those students the College would like to admit but cannot accommodate in the Fall. So, for those students, January admission is the only option if they want to attend Hamilton.

what is the difference if they are going to get admitted anyways, just at a later date?

That depends on individual perspective. The admitted student may want to participate in the Fall orientation programs and other activities with the rest of his or her classmates, and therefore may choose to attend another college if not offered this experience.

First semester freshman year is an intense experience. You won’t realize it until later, but lifetime friendships and networks are established in that time that would be impossible to establish at any other time. If you really want to attend, being a Jan is fine, but you really need to think about missing out on that first semester. D describes it as a little like boot camp, where you all unite against the professors pushing you to your limits.

Thanks - I was worried about seeming flaky, but the truth is that I wasn’t fully aware of the opportunity until after I applied and it’s exactly what I want.

Thanks. I’ve switched schools many times and I make friends easily, and I imagine I’d also bond with the other Jans and form relationships that I would bring back to campus. I know I’d be missing out on some things, but I have been contemplating a gap year to volunteer abroad and also considered applying to colleges overseas. In the end, I really felt a pull toward Hamilton and decided to apply ED, but this feels like “the best of both worlds” if I’m lucky enough to get into the college.

Btw, what you just wrote, adjusted for the admissions committee, would be an excellent communication to the College. They may write back that the January openings are not created until the end of the RD round, but they should respect your open-minded interest in any event. Or, wait to see whether you are accepted ED and then write them. I hope you get in.

Jans are able to participate in Fall orientation, at least the pre-orientation (and more intense) programs such as Adirondack Adventure and Outreach Adventure. They can form friendships with the Fall admits and then bid farewell for a semester, picking things up again in January.
