Hamilton College Social Life CURRENT STUDENTS

It would be great if current students at Hamilton College could talk a bit about the social life and whether they are happy. Is the small he size and relative isolation beneficial? Does size make students cliquey?

ANYTHING would be helpful.

Thank you!

i’m curious about this too!!

hello! current upperclassman here. social life at hamilton certainly does take on the “community” aspect… its commonplace to know lots of peoples names, say hi to people and see familiar faces when going to classes, walking around, etc. because it is small people definitely do form groups that they have close friendships with, but it’s not cliquey. most people are always open to making new friendships and connections so the social scene isn’t too stagnant. greek life can definitely be a bit exclusive, but its greek life, so that’s kind of the point. you certainly don’t need to be in greek life to still have a good social life and go to parties… but its there if you want it. i would say that majority of hamilton students drink to some extent, some of which like to go out and party, others who just prefer chill nights with close friends, and there are certainly people who don’t drink at all. you won’t be judged by anyone for whatever style fits you best. its also totally normal to be the person who likes to go and party, and then stay in some nights or study one weekend night. nightlife is really whatever you make of it.

i believe most hamilton students are happy.

as far as isolation goes, the hamilton bubble is definitely real. during the semesters when everyone’s super busy it can be difficult to get off campus, and hamilton can feel like the epicenter of your attention. its not the worst thing in the world, and its something everyone is going through together so the hamilton community you build is definitely stronger during those times. that being said, although hamilton is in central new york, at the base of the hill clinton is a lovely town, and theres a more commercial shopping area ~15 min away that has all of the stores/chains/restaurants you can probably think of.

my advice if you’re an incoming student-- take advantage of every social opportunity. go to different clubs, activities, and spend time with different people. hamilton students are all so interesting and don’t fit under one label. you would be surprised the friendships you can form by just initiating a conversation, asking someone to dinner, to study, etc.
