Hamilton ED 1

That’s great information @MiddKid86. I’m glad you caught my oversight.

January admit decisions are decided after the fall class has been filled.

I talked with D about this thread and she confirmed that Jans typically have trouble breaking into the rest of the college network and as a result, they’re often friends with each other. She is friends with a few who are coming to campus soon, so they may break in with her, but it’s not easy. Those that do the London thing become particularly close among themselves, but there are some real downsides to doing it.

Everyone got the email reminding them about decisions being released at 8 EST right??

@CrewDad‌ I thought Jan Admit was filled as people apply (i.e. when early applicants enter and also when regular applicants enter)

IS ANYONE ELSE FREAKING OUT ABOUT RESPONSES OR IS THAT JUST ME

@imsostressed101: If you are freaking out, you can be sure others are as well. Good luck.

I’ll be applying RD but I just wanted to say good luck to all ED applicants! Maybe I’ll meet some of you on the Hill next year :)

My son got very good news tonight. Hope the rest of you are happy with yours.

@Mammakin: Congratulations to him! He earned it.

Here’s an interesting twist - friend of the family got in ED, but as a Jan Plan. Didn’t see that coming, but she’s happy to be in.

I’d have to figure that Hamilton dropped the mutually binding provision?

I would hope they would drop it considering not everyone would want the January start. I’m surprised they did this for ED, I would expect it more in the RD pool.

Imsostressed, I read the following to mean that the Jan admissions are decided after the regular and early decisions are finalized.

I was aware that the students who were deferred ED1 and ED11 were eligible for Jan admission. Apparently, Jan admission is offered to ED applicants as part of ‘filling the fall class’
In my opinion, it’s confusing. However, having stated that Jan admits are selected from ED applicants, admission is binding.

It was a very quick conversation last night, but I do believe that I heard the Jan offer was not binding, but you need to decide pretty quickly. I will try and clarify exactly what the offer is. They were as confused as we were, but fortunately I know enough about the Jan Plan to ease their mid that everything was okay and it’s a perfectly legit idea.

I talked with my wife about this this morning and we wondered what we’d advise our D had this happened last year. We quickly came to the consensus that if you get in your #1 school, even if it’s unconventional, you probably go in most circumstances. (There are a few circumstances where I can see it just not working, for example students with certain medical conditions.) After all, if you applied to Harvard and they said we’ll take you next year, sure you’d wait around.

I did look and see if there was a way to switch to Fall admission, and that is explicitly not allowed - they apparently have their reasons for offering what they offer. Starting next Fall in London is not the worst thing in the world, and you still get to do AA (now mandatory) and all the regular Orientation stuff.

“After all, if you applied to Harvard and they said we’ll take you next year, sure you’d wait around.”

I suppose that’s true for someone who applied to the school, but for the analogy to be effective I have to make a lot of assumptions about what other people value.

For the record, when the Boston Globe asked mayoral candidate Charlie Baker to take the Proust Questionnaire, he responded as follows:

Q: What is your greatest regret?

A: Not going to Hamilton College. I never really felt comfortable at Harvard.

Thank you for your candor, Mr. Baker.

Merc81, thanks for sharing. Especially for us from the Boston area, Baker’s response is great on so many levels. I must show my son.

Of course I was implying if it was your #1 school. No sense waiting around for some place you don’t even want to go to.

Janurary admission is in fact not binding. The student has until May 1st to decide, which allows them to apply to other colleges.
