Just out of curiosity, what were their stats?

  • 3.9 UW; 4.4 W
  • Top 6% of class of 530
  • 5 APs completed, 4 in progress
  • From Washington State
  • Did not submit test scores. (5 SATs cancelled in spring & summer & none available this fall.)
  • Much demonstrated interest.

Edited to add that D21 also works 20 hours per week.

DS was deferred, a surprise since he is a supported athlete.

GPA - 3.984
SAT - 1420
ACT - 32
6 AP’s completed (scores all 4s & 5s)
Currently taking 3 AP courses

The coach did counsel DS to apply without test scores but as DS was applying to our state schools too, the scores were part of his Coalition profile. (He had taken those exams early in 2019 to benchmark himself but was unable to retake later due to COVID.)

Sigh.

Congratulations to your daughter! We are also applying from a HS in Washington State (but are officially TX residents).

Sorry to hear that, Cocoa Tiger. That’s frustrating. If you don’t mind the question and feel comfortable sharing: What sport?

We’ve heard all kinds of horror stories about unpredictable assessments from coaches this cycle. It’s such a challenging year, with coaches making unusual and/or delayed decisions for a variety of COVID-related reasons (including surprising D1 moves that have cascading effects at the D3 level).

super surprised he didn’t get in. I am so sorry! I hope he gets in during regular admission. :frowning:

No problem, @VikingH, DS is a rower. He has a zoom meeting scheduled tomorrow with the rowing coach to discuss.

We have nothing but wonderful things to say about the coach who was very clear from the beginning that there are no guarantees, but after an extremely positive pre-read DS was obviously a bit too complacent. Once DS settled on Hamilton he was committed to Hamilton all the way and he didn’t apply anywhere else.* Now he is feeling a bit foolish!

*Excepting our two state flagships as backups because we parents insisted, but both our flagships -UT-Austin and UW Seattle- are competitive schools in their own right and not at all sure things.

@andoverorpublic Thank you for the kind words.

I’m quite surprised at the deferral. I’m sure your family was blindsided. I hope the coach will strongly advocate for your son.

Thanks for sharing, @CocoaTiger. That’s surprising and disappointing, although I suspect that this is the type of story that will be much more common this year around the nation. I wish him the best of luck. You’re lucky to have such excellent flagship publics available.

@CocoaTiger, what a disappointment. I might reach out to the coach at Bates to see if there’s still interest there. Given that your son struggled to choose, perhaps this is the universe’s way of making that decision for him?

I got in as a Jan!

@Putney2021, my son was a Jan. He’s currently a junior. He very much enjoyed his time studying in London his first semester. Congratulations on your acceptance!

Sorry to hear CocoaTiger. Maybe I can share some words of encouragement. My DD is a first year at Hamilton. She had a positive pre-read, 4.0/4.0 GPA, 33 ACT and all 4s and 5s on AP exams from one of the most competitive high schools in the North East.

NESCAC recruiting follows a very strict framework. Unless the coach uses his/her 1 or 2 “slots” for your child, admission is not guaranteed. If I were to guess, if the coach mentioned to exclude the test scores, your DS was not the coaches "slot.

I wanted to mention this for other families/students contemplating this road. The recruiting process is/can be arbitrary. Don’t let it get you or your DS down! To highlight the randomness, I have a junior in HS in advanced math, science, etc. A girl in his grade in what is effectively “entry level” math just committed to a top 3 university for D1 lacrosse. Typically average student. Nothing bad, nothing great. My son recognizes he has close to a zero shot of getting into that school now.

That being said, my DD was not “the slot” on the team at Hamilton. As such, she chose to apply RD instead of ED. In fact, she did not apply to a single school ED. She loved the Hamilton coach but by not being offered the “slot”, her focus switched to other NESCAC schools.

At the end of the day, she did choose Hamilton over Bates, Colby, and Bowdoin in the RD process. She fell in love with the school (unrelated to sports) and could not be happier despite the COVID distruptions.

My point is, this is a long road and I firmly believe having just lived through it is most students end up at a school that winds up being a great fit! Recruiting is a random roller coaster! Don’t let it define your DS’ happiness or achievements!!!

So there are definitely more than one or two slots allotted each team each year though could be dependent on the team. Clearly football gets more than one spot or else they wouldn’t have a team! I know most get at least 6 spots per year. There is a difference when a coach uses a spot on the athlete or says they will advocate for the athlete. They also could reserve a couple of spots for ea 2 or rd with a late blooming athlete or one whose first school recruiting process broke down like here. Your son had really good credentials to get in and had some kind of support from the coach. I am so sorry it didn’t work out. I hope the coach is able to get him in during rd. Let us know. Good luck!
