According to this source,
@Putney2021 Thrilled for you! Congratulations!
Thanks all for the advice and encouragement. DS just spoke with the coach and as @Mercer250 discerned, it turns out that DS was not an officially supported athlete after all. The coach admitted that, precisely because DS’s pre-read was so positive, he felt it unnecessary to spend one of his allocated spots on him. Coach is shocked and apologetic and is helping to advocate on DS’s behalf but can only do so informally. Oh well, it is what it is.
Meanwhile DS is submitting RD applications to the other schools on his list, including Bates - his other top choice. Now, Bates offers an ED2 and the Bates coach had offered DS an official (!) supported athlete spot (one of 8) for either ED1 or ED2, that DS turned down. DS isn’t quite ready to turn around and apply ED2 to Bates, though, with or without coach support. It’s been less than 24 hours and despite the setback he’s still mentally committed to Hamilton. If he does change his mind I’m sure he will reach out and ask the Bates coach if any open supported athlete spots remain, but we anticipate those are long gone by now.
DS is in the position of being quite a strong academic candidate (but not a superstar) and also quite a strong rowing candidate (but not a superstar). We are discovering that it really helps to be superstar one or the other, and that being strong at both doesn’t confer a synergistic advantage.
Once your son has a little more time to process the decision, he might want to reconsider applying ED2 to Bates. They take well over 50% of their class between ED1 and ED2. (College Kickstart said that they took around 70% of the class of 2024 early, but I don’t know how reliable they are.) Last year my D was WL’d RD at Bates, but accepted to Colby, Williams, Haverford, and Middlebury. It’s such a tough decision; I feel for your son.
I know for a fact they have at least 6 spots in at least 2 sports (not including football) in 4 different nescacs. It’s awful that the coach gambled and tried to get an extra athlete. I’m sorry that was not made more clear.
There was a thread about NESCAC recruiting on another board. If I can find it, I will post it. I spoke to four NESCAC coaches directly about the recruiting process. For the team I am familiar with, the coach has 2 (A) slots. Those are the coveted players. They then have the next band (B) that usually captures 2-4 kids. They also have a C band but that is beyond this discussion. They don’t have 6 coach slots that the coach can allocate. Football is a different animal given the size of the team. Coaches communicate differently. An open dialogue should work best but unfortunately doesn’t always happen.
@andoverorpublic, in retrospect the coach never explicitly offered DS a supported athlete slot, so that’s on us. Let others learn from our naiveté!
At least DS wasn’t denied admission outright (as some of his friends were) and he has already sent off applications to a number of schools, so in the end we are in the same position as most. We’re excited for those who received good news and with luck DS will join them on campus next fall, but if not we know he’ll be in an equally good spot.
Has anyone heard of social media groups for Hamilton 2025? D21 can’t find any.
It’s going to work out. Please update on here when it does
I also recommend London! My student, a senior now, is still in a close circle of friends from his London semester. Great experience and he feels lucky he was a Jan and had the chance to do it. (It also costs less than a semester at Hamilton)
My daughter is c/o 2023. There was a Hamilton admitted students Facebook group back in 2019 but my daughter logged in once. A lot of students posted their Instagram handles and left Facebook. I’d recommend she update her Instagram bio and search for people/ pages using the hashtags #hamilton2025 #hamilton #hamiltoncollege #studywhatyoulove etc
Last year Hamilton set up a Class of 2024 Facebook page for the admitted students and in almost every e-mail correspondence for the first month after acceptance Hamilton would suggest the students go on there and connect with their future classmates. They haven’t done that this year? My son wouldn’t go on there because he said no kids use Facebook. Maybe Hamilton realized that and is doing it on another social media platform.
There’s a class of 2025 page! Your son is right though, I have no idea how facebook works :). Nobody has posted in it yet except for the current Hamilton students who introduced themselves. I’ve connected with a couple other ED applicants who also commented on Hamilton’s Instagram post. @Creaky the link to the facebook group is in the applicant portal.
I’ll tell my kid. Thanks. (No one in my family is on Facebook.) IG is my daughter’s big thing. Well, that and Tic Tok.
There’s also a Hamilton College parents FB page. For us old folks.
Does anyone know how many students were accepted ED? Or how many applications were received ED?
Daughter was accepted as a ‘Jan’. Any others Jans or Jan parents on here looking at the fall semester in London?
Happy holidays.
As a suggestion for Jan admits, students interested in studying in London should consider taking the AP exam in English Literature to qualify for Arcadia’s course on Shakespeare.
I’m a Jan! I’m looking at the London program! Seems to be the best and most popular Jan experience, plus you have a group of people who you develop close relationships with
@Putney2021. Many Congrats on your acceptance. Daughter will definitely be attending Hamilton in January and 99% sure it will be the fall semester for her in London. As a dual national, She was initially interested in studying all 4 years in UK (mon not so happy about that option) so this seems like a really good compromise for all concerned.
@dadpitt, my son is a junior and was a Jan. He did the London program. Loved it. Of course, that was Fall of '18. I’d be happy to answer any questions you might have.
Congratulations to your daughter on her acceptance to Hamilton!
