"Handmaid's Tale" for AP English Lit?

Would be a good idea for me to write about "The Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Atwood for the 3rd essay prompt on the AP English Literature test.

I know the 3rd essay prompt has a list of novels I could use, but I would really want to use the "The Handmaid's Tale" instead. The problem is that I'm not sure if this book is considered of "Literary Merit". The book (If anyone is familiar with it) is basically utopian novel about a Christian theocracy that subjugates women and essentially turns them breeding cattle. Is there a reason the readers wouldn't like it? Or should I probably go with a different novel instead?

Margaret Atwood is definitely an extremely respected author of literary merit. Go for it. I love that book.

Just a random grown up here, without specific AP advice, but this was a major work when I was in school especially in women’s studies type classes. Still to this day I think about certain parts of it.

Thanks for the answers! I just wanted to make sure that “The Handmaid’s Tale” would be a good choice, and I’ve now decided to use it for the test!
