Pick one where a lot of stuff happens or there's lots of themes, and study it a lot. I'm doing Prayer for Owen Meany and Jude the Obscure because tons of stuff happens so there's sure to be something that fits the prompt, and Equus because you can use it for almost EVERYTHING.

The two that have been on the exam most often in the past like, 10-20 years (well, not ON it, but recommended) are Invisible Man and Heart of Darkness. I don't recommend reading Invisible Man just tonight, but maybe sparknote it? :)

Picture of Dorian Gray | Oscar Wilde
The Awakening | Kate Chopin
This Side of Paradise | F. Scott Fitzgerald
A Farewell to Arms | Ernest Hemingway
The Crucible | Arthur Miller
The Catcher in the Rye | J.D. Salinger
The House of Seven Gables | Nathaniel Hawthorne
Ragtime | E. L. Doctorow

I intend on using Atlas Shrugged if I'm in dire need of a book. Honestly, if The Bonesetter's Daughter makes the list of "literature" then I don't see why Atlas Shrugged doesn't. I also don't know why The Glass Menagerie is on the list...since nothing happens.

i don't think picking a popular book will work against you...unless you write a completely cliched essay
just choose two or three books you enjoy and feel comfortable with thematically. that way, when the prompt comes, you will be able to automatically think about the books themes...and maybe have a little fun with the open endedness of the question :)
