So I got put into Hanszen, and I know almost nothing about it. (Although I do know that it is the best college ever. :p) If any Hanszenites or other students can give some info about Hanszen, it'd be much appreciated.

I'm a junior at Hanszen. Read the wikipedia page for Hanszen. It's a pretty good place to start. Hanszen is one of the first four colleges, so we are automatically better than all the other 5 (haha not really). But being old is really cool. The Hanszen buildings (especially old section) is very pretty. On the other hand, our rooms aren't the best. As a freshman, you will either be in a double with hallway restrooms or in a four person quad with two bedrooms, a living room, and a bathroom. The quads are actually pretty nice. The A/C has been upgraded to add individual controls last summer as well as the furniture so things are looking up. And Hanszen and Wiess share the South Servery, meaning we have good food (well, better than the other south colleges at least).

Hanszen is the family college. While I believe every college is similar in this regard, we have that name for some reason. Wes and Barbara (our masters) are great (they are mentors you can go to for anything from personal problems to free food). Hanszen has plenty of fun traditions, though our only party, Mardi Gras, is typically crappy. Being one of the first colleges, the Coffeehouse as well as KTRU were started at Hanszen.

Be ready for the Hanszen-Wiess rivalry. They have nicer facilities than us, but at the same time, Wiess is a cult you don't want to get involved in. They are isolated in a corner of Rice and don't even have a new o-week theme each year. But they're not that bad...

I don't know what else to tell you, but feel free to ask me.

Regarding facilities, rest assured that Hanszen has the things all the other colleges have. Kitchens, laundry (free), computer labs, game rooms, library, TV rooms, private dining room, and study rooms. Hanszen has the Weenie Loft (a great place to study or to watch movies). Also, our commons is one of the newest on campus. It is very large and nice, meaning all kinds of organizations request to use it. Oh and Hanszen is the only college that gives access to free printing for all residents (just don't be greedy with paper).

I just got into Hanszen too. I've been browsing through the photo gallery on the college website. It's got a lot of photos and they give you some idea of the events the college holds and the general atmosphere. You may want to take a look at that.

I am also in Hanszen!

hanszen hanszen yeah!

hanszen has the best cheers (despite what everybody else says)
and the people are super mad cool
trust me :-D

yaaa i'm excited for new freshman

The first thing you need to acquire is a hat/shirt that says HFH. This stands for HARRY F--- ing Hanszen.

Hanszen is The Best.
D just graduated from Rice as a proud Hanszenite- you graduate with your residential college, by the way, which is really cool. She lived in new section freshman year and on floor 20 (it was actually like 4, but carrying the stuff up felt like 20) of old section soph year. She lived off campus last two years but still did plenty of things with Hanszen. Any questions, PM me and I'll give you her email address.

woohoo!! My s will be a sr in Hanszen this year!! You'll love it!

BTW, mowc, the old section is, or has been redone, I believe.

Thanks for all the info.

Gotta be honest, though, I'm a little disappointed with my room assignment. Looking at the tour on the O-Week DVD, the suites are much nicer w/ the living area + bathrooms and even the quads with two doubles + living area are nicer. I was hoping for a suite because I really don't like communal bathrooms (experienced from a summer program last year), especially on a co-ed floor. Kind of uncomfortable. Also, my roommate just doesn't seem like me at all; everything on their form just seems totally unlike me (I know it's probably too early to tell, but still). :(
Sorry for all that, like I said, I'm just sorta disappointed. I'm still a proud Hanszenite. HFH!

You remind me of myself two years ago. I also wished I had a new section room (which I finally will this fall), but looking back I'm glad I lived in old section as a freshman. I think the community experience of hallways in old section helps people to find and get to know each other. I also thought I'd hate the restroom situation (and I kind of did, I won't lie) but it also was not as bad as I thought. Just don't worry about it, you'll be fine.

My roomate seems pretty cool, but we kind of ran out of things to say pretty quickly when I called her today. Without going into detail, she is in a major that is very time consuming, in which I have a feeling that I will rarely see her. My suitemates seem pretty cool, in fact one of them lives practically right down the street from me (she went to the rival school).

It's alright nose, if you still don't like your roomate, you can hang out with me. I'm in the new section, so if you ever need a place to hang out or stay, feel free to stop on by.

nose- Even though my daughter was in the new section freshman year, she saw a lot of advantages to old section, and hung out there a lot. She wasn't close to her roommates at all- none of the 3. They were all just really different. They lived fine together, but weren't in the same social crowd. She made tons of friends at Hanszen, though, and always had something to do.

You already received info on your roommate? No word for my son yet, but he's in a different residential college.

Hey nose, about your roommate: Rice has a reputation for matching roommates pretty well, so don't worry just yet. Keep in mind that you only have one page of info on your roommate, but the other page had pretty important stuff. So maybe you are both non-smokers who don't like to party and have the same sleeping habits. To me, that's more important than, say, sharing a love of horses. Know what I mean? Maybe y'all won't be BFFs, but you'll probably be able to live with each other. Making friends won't be a problem, so don't worry if you and your roommate don't end up close.

Just wait and see... I don't think your rooming situation will take away from your Rice experience. :D

Thanks everyone for the encouraging words. I'm sure everything will be alright in the end. (Although my mom is freaked out about communal bathrooms on coed floors. LOL)

The bathrooms themselves aren't coed, though.

HFH!
I was in new section my freshman year and while i definitely appreciated the adjoining bathroom and common room, i feel that the old section residents got a lot closer than the new section...

have fun at o-week :)
