Happy Day at my house

While my daughter's college process is not yet over and she is waiting to hear from three more schools, she still had a very happy day today and I figure why not jump on the good news track on the Parents Forum, considering the bad news we have had as of late. My daughter is still confined to bed but at least the hospital bed is in our living room and she is doing well.

Anyway, I have shared some college news so far but today was a real happy day for my daughter and it could not have come at a better time. While in the hospital, she did learn she would be accepted to NYU/Tisch due at first to receiving an invitation to an event in early April called Saturday in the Square (for Tisch) that apparently goes out to approximately 5% of those at the top of the admit pile. Then she received a letter later in the hospital that she was selected as a University Scholar which has some great perks....it is an Honors College type of thing at Tisch and approx. 15 students at Tisch receive this. Some things that it includes are paid trips in the US and abroad, special seminars with speakers and events. There is a reception for these kids in ten days at NYU as well.

Today, however, she got her official acceptance package. Ok, that was not a shock given the first two things that had arrived. However, included in the package was a Trustee's Scholarship for $20,000 and we were in shock as we had already thought her other merit scholarships were significant but this one was the highest yet and from a school where we had heard that they don't give that much in terms of merit. We are kinda astounded she got it and it surely would help if she chooses to go there given the high cost of this college (she also got various loans and such on top of it). But the other very happy news was that while she was happy to get into Tisch, she had been reserved about it until learning if she got into her first choice studio, which is called CAP21, their only musical theater studio (for the BFA), though they also have 7 acting studios she could have gotten. The studio assignments have not gone out yet but they were willing to tell me on the phone that she had gotten into CAP21. She was so happy.

Recently, she had been accepted with merit scholarships to the BFA in Musical Theater programs at Ithaca, Penn State and Syracuse. She was accepted to Emerson College back in Dec. but deferred for the BFA in MT until April 1 so still waiting to hear of that decision, plus waiting to get decisions from Boston Conservatory (likely to come in the next day or two) and from Carnegie Mellon (have no clue when that will come, hopefully by next week).

And while this is not on the same level, my other daughter, a college freshman who is on spring break, called from her trip in Utah with a classmate whose family invited her to their timeshare at Snowbird, that she has had a fantastic time, having never skied at a place as big as this or like this and how much snow they got and today she skied in two feet of fresh powder (only skiers will know why that sounds great) and there was so much snow that they had to close the roads back out of the mountains to Salt Lake and so she and the other girl had to take some police escort vans to the city earlier than they had planned for a midnight flight east and now are at an NBA game and she will be flying to NYC during the night and then to VT in the AM and coming home for three days so we get to see her and she will be with her sister again.

I'm glad my younger one is getting some dreams realized during a rough time in her life and she has lots to look forward to at the end of her recovery. We are not sure if we can get her to her receptions at NYU in ten days or how that would work, we will see. Thankfully she is alive and I shudder what it would have been like to get these kinds of letters in the mail had we lost her!

Susan

Nothing but congratulations and good wishes from us old hippies here in CA. Since sorrow comes and sorrow goes, when good things show up don't hold back on joy.

Soozie, I could not be happier for you and your D. She has to be one talented kid!!

Indeed! Thank God she is there to open the letters! I was wondering how you all were doing so am very glad to hear all the good news. Your D must be an extraordinary young woman, to have gotten such recognition from NYU.

Someday we will all say we knew her when.... But of course most of us don't know her at all. But I predict that one of these years, an extraordinary woman will graciously accept an Academy Award, and she will thank her parents, and her sister, and her director, and her agent, and then, at the very end, all of her mom's friends on CC - and then we'll know!

Soozie - what happy, happy news! Perhaps in a few years we'll be seeing your daughter on Broadway?

Soozie:

I remember how much your D wanted to go to Tisch last summer. What great news!

The news is just going to get better and better. Fantastic.

Soozie--wonderful news! Very happy for your D!

What great news. Surely that will aid in the healing process.

This is just great news all around!! You deserve it, after all you've been through.

By the way, did you ever get to meet that ski coach you were telling us so much about??? And glad older d. had such a great time at Snowbird. that's what's great about Snowbird and Alta-- you can get a foot or more of snow dumped on you in April, and then, if the pass is open, drive down that very same day into Salt Lake City and play golf.

Great news! Thanks for sharing. Here's to a speedy recovery!

Susan - what wonderful news for your DD to recoup by - I am sure your DD's recovery is being engineered and boosted in some way by the college adcom acceptance gods lol - and doing a very good job of it I may say. It is a proven fact that patients recoup better in happy atmospheres - so she is - I am very sure - going to bounding back.

CONGRATS to you and your DD - she sounds like one amazing young lady - with an awesome MOM too. :)

Thank you Thank you Thank you!

Wish IT Were April: your post cracked me up. I can just picture it now (though my D would be more interested in a Tony than an Academy Award, lol)....and "thank you folks on CC for your support!" Ah, it should only happen. Then again, there are many measures of success and thankfully she will grace the stage again, and who knows which stages those will be in the future.

JYM....actually the mountain pass closed today so they escorted folks who had to get to airports in some police vans or some such! My daughter just has never skied at a place like that and I think the whole thing with powder snow flying in her face two feet deep and just the whole mountain there was quite something. Today they had to stay lower down the mountain due to avalanche danger.

As far as the Smith ski coach, I had the good fortune of meeting him at the National Championships in Idaho the week before my other D's car accident. His team did not make Nationals but he had one individual skier who did. I think if my D had gone to Smith, his team might have made it. She would have been higher up their roster than she is at Brown and he needed a third skier of her level. Anyway, he and I talked a while and not only did I compliment him on how he dealt with my prospective student at the time but also now that she is at Brown and how he encourages her each week at the races both schools attend. He also had lovely things to say about my daughter and it was a nice visit. I'm glad I had this chance to give him the feedback he deserved. My daughter is not a recruited athlete but this had more to do with how he was just very nice to her on campus visits and via email and now even though she is on another team, he gives her cheers and hints (how classy is that in a sport?). My daughter also tried to include their lone skier in some things with her team since the Smith girl did not have a team with her.

Again, Thanks guys for being there.
Susan

Awesome news, Mrs Susan! Congrats to your younger daughter.

I am very happy that you received such great news to compensate for the medical problems. Brown and NYU make a very nice set of bookholders. Now you can relax a bit ... no more applications!

Susan,

I am just so excited for your daughter and her acceptance at Tisch WITH HER FIRST CHOICE STUDIO that I am just sitting here beaming at the very thought! As someone with three girls who are pretty heavily involved in MT, I KNOW exactly what this means and how astounding an honor it is for your very talented gal. What a wonderful time for all of this good news to come her way...she has been faced with such an unexpected and difficult challenge--I am sure her recovery will be helped along by the prospects of so very much to anticipate! We actually had one of our local teen actors go on to NYU about two years ago. He is doing very well in New York, and I just marvel at how fate as taken him so very far from his roots in Kansas. There is no more exciting place for a young actress than New York--what a world of opportunity will be opened up for your D!

It certainly sounds like your oldest daughter is having the time of her life on her spring break ski trip! How fun to have the opportunity to ski in that kind of snow! I am glad that she will be able to come home in time to see her sister for a few days.

Susan, I wanted to thank you so much for posting your congrats on my son's Duke acceptance. I know how busy you've been and how tired you must be, but still, you took the time to post about something that was so meaningful to me and my son. You are such a kind and thoughtful woman, and I've truly enjoyed corresponding with you through this forum.

Be on the lookout for a small package for your D. My girls (your D's sisters in muscial theatre) are sending a little something special for her that I think she will really enjoy!

Again, I am SO delighted for all of your fantastic news, and we continue to wish health, happiness and success for BOTH of your fine daughters!

love, ~berurah

wOOt! joins in the happy dance

Susan,

When I went downstairs to tell H about your D and Berurah's S, it occurred me that I probably had the wrong award for MT - it is musical THEATER, after all - but I am glad it gave you a laugh and you got my point! We've also had good news here, but I am waiting until it is all in to post anything official. But I do look forward to doing that!

Wish

Where did you get the information about Tisch Saturday at the Square invites being sent to the top 5%? My son also got one, but when he called, they were very vague about what it meant....eg. "select group of the strongest applicants"..... Still no "official" acceptance. Congratulations to your daughter!

Susan! I am so happy for you and your D! NYU/Tisch/Cap21 must REALLY want her with all those wonderful benefits, and that is an amazing scholarship offer for NYU. (Did you consider yet that maybe this was a big plus NOT to go ED for NYU, since they made such a great offer RD?) A big bouquet of cyber-roses for your D and a matching one for her devoted mom.

lyricasta-check out the nyu board on this website on the Sunday at the Square part...it explains most of this...
