hard time finding internship.

Im currently a junior at san diego state University. In the business program, going for business marketing. Im looking for an internship, amd having a hard time finding a company to work for. Seems like, online the only places looking for interns are small coffee shops, sign makers, atrs and crafts. Id eventually want to work for sony or xbox (gaming and entertainment), even have my own firm one day. O almost feel like these small businesses just want free help. And i really dont have time to waste. If anyone has any wisdom, advice or tips to pass along id greatly appreciate it. Im starting to think its best to just go to a comapny in person rather than looking online. Also sam diego doesnt seem to offer much.

You need to look in the right places.

Since you are at SDSU, you have to go to career services on campus. Ask the counselors there for alumni contacts. Also, your professors have former students who owe them bigtime! Ask your professors.
Also, San Diego has some big defense contractors, they need business people who know how to market and sell products. PM me for some ideas.

Ask help from your school counselors. They are big help for these things. Or why don’t you try applying for internship abroad? that might also be helpful? If you’re up for it.

it’s good to hear that you want to try internship. internship abroad is a good suggestion. I already applied because I really wanna challenge myself. my tip is, before engaging in the internship, ask everything you want to know to prevent “wasting your time”, have a list of the things that you want to learn, and you might wanna ask the company if they can give you training on that.

is it not advisable to take those available internships for now? I mean in the small coffee shops. You’d get an experience there then you could use that experience to have your chance on the bigger companies?

Sony has an office in San Diego. http://www.worldwidestudios.net/homepage

Also if you internship with experience then go for it. even if it does not pay. the experience is what counts and will open doors. you can always work wkends at starbucks or somewhere for spending money.

also try some of the advertising agencies. I worked at a top agency when I was a junior and it opened doors. it was only PT but the experience was invaluable. just make sure they give you real work before committing.
