Hard Time Finding Job

Is the unemployment really just 4.5%? I'm a sophomore in college and having a hard time finding a job. I'm finding it hard to land a job at just the library and local retail stores. I've got friends who are juniors top schools with good GPAs and are also having a hard time finding a job. Anyone else having the same problem?

nope, pretty much everywhere in my dang town is hiring... cause the majority of its workforce isn't here right now.

Not here. Then again, I go to school in NYC so there's really no lack of opportunity.

I live in NYC and ive applied to close to 110 jobs, there is nothing.

Well...I've gotten jobs relatively easily through my school's career-net. This includes work positions both on and off campus.

EDIT: There is also that small fact that my references (college professors) think I kick a lot of ass.

kinglin i can relate!
i'm gonna be a sophomore next year, and haven't had a job before. i tried last summer but nothing panned out. so i applied online to a bazillion retail stores, and heard back from macy's and mervyn's. well, macy's and i didn't match our availability, but i FINALLY got hired today at mervyn's. if that hadn't worked... idk... target?
but yah, it's hard. no one wants to call up the college kids, it seems. employers hate the fact that so many people only want summer jobs and then poof we're gone, leaving them to train new people come fall. kinko's wouldn't even hire my friend because the training period alone is 3 months. and if you're looking for your first job, good luck! no one wants to hire without job experience but no one wants to give it. classic catch-22.
availability is the main problem i've encountered here. either stores are unwilling to hire people here for only 3 months or less, or they want people who are HAPPY to work weekends and nights! right. sigh
however, mervyn's was actually looking for part-time seasonal employees. go figure. so, SOME stores (especially those with a big back-to-school push at the end of summer) should be looking more for this type of employment. try more clothing stores, office supply stores, anything and everything you can think of. and be persistent. i heard that to get a job at border's you have to pester them every day just to get them to notice you. applying online and leaving it at that is really not gonna get you anywhere (not saying you did that, just saying that i did that).
so as far as basic jobs go, yes, it seems they're fairly hard to come by. for entry-level jobs, and post-college jobs, i can only hope that our searches won't be this difficult and annoying!
good luck to you! :)

i'm a high school, about to enter my freshman year in college....as far as retail jobs like best buy,in the online application you have to go with strongly disagree or strongly agree, nothing in between

Try craigslist.

I was in the same situation as you for the past two summers, luckily I've found some good jobs on craigslist, I actually start my new one tomorrow. Its cool because its for the summer, so hopefully if I can get in good with them, the position will be available next summer too!

I second the craigslist suggestion. Also, if its a summer job, try working at a summer camp. They're used to hiring people with little to no experience that they can train, they tend to pay pretty well and the hours will be similar to most of your friends if they've got internships/office jobs.

I've been having a terrible time trying to find a job for the summer, as well. It's frustrating the mess out of me!

I've applied to well over a dozen places in my area (retail, clerical, and a couple teller/book keeping ones)...and yeah. Most just aren't looking for summer workers but a few had people who worked for them summers before come back and take their jobs back (two that were ready to offer me a job, too! grrr).

So yeah, right now I'm waiting for a call from the last place I interviewed at...cause they told me they'd either call yesterday or Monday after the manager gets back from vacation...and the interview went very well...I might give up if I don't hear anything from them, though. It's just too depressing.

Many employers do not want to hire people just for the summer because it is hassle. Apply to more places and you will eventually get an invitation to an interview. Do not apply to malls as 100+ people will apply to each store during the summer. Also try talking to the manager directly rather than filling out an application.

Honestly, try using the school career services. Our school has a job database, and I just went through and mailed off my resume. I found an AMAZING job this past spring quarter. $14/hr, I work on my own time (as long as I get it done), and I even log my own hours.

if you're applying to a department store or something, you don't tell them that you're going to leave come the end of august for school. just quit once you have to go back to school.

They tend to get the idea that you'll be leaving if you're honest on the application and list your university and all that, though.

I may be able to get a job if I lied, sure, but I'm not a liar...so I guess I'm stuck being honest and unpaid. Besides, I was looking for a place to be able to go back to during holidays and next summer...which definitely wouldn't happen if I up and quit come the first week of September. Oh well.

temp agency and unemployment agency

Just lie and tell them to plan to work for a long time then just leave.

fiind a temp agency... the money is pretty awesome and there is a stream of steady jobs throughout the summer
