Harder to get into Rice from Houston than Texas cities farther from Rice eg Austin?

Is it harder to get into Rice from Houston than from Texas cities farther from Rice like Austin? How much?

How much harder is it to get into Rice from Texas than from somewhere outside of Texas?

Just wondering. Thanks.

"the difficulty of gaining admission to rice is indirectly proportional to the distance from rice"

straight out of my physics textbook

It'd be pretty hard to classify a numerical value or percentage to the difficulty in getting into Rice but like fender says: the closer you live to Rice, the harder it is to getting into Rice.

I agree with the previous posts, but that kind of thinking creates doubt for many Texans who believe they are at a huge disadvantage for being in-state. I live about 20 minutes from Rice and got in ED, but many of my classmates did not apply simply because they thought that "Rice hates Houstonians." So yes, it is generally "harder" for in-state applicants because Rice seeks geographic diversity, but if you submit a great application, you shouldn't let your location concern you.

x0julie, all I was trying to say was that if two students had the same exact application and applied to Rice in the same year and the only thing different between the two was that one was from Alaska rather than Texas, the person from Alaska would have a better chance of getting into Rice than the one living in Texas.

In fact, Texas accepts good percent from within its state (40%?)

I think Texas is Texas no matter where you're from. You're in the same boat as those Houston kids... IMHO.

I concur, but I don't think in-state students should remove Rice from their top choice list, like many of my classmates did, just because they think their chances are too low against competitive OOS applicants.

Would applying from Arizona help about as much as any other state, or would it not be as good since it is still in the southwest?

Yes, definitely. In the class of 2011, there were only 9 students from Arizona. Rice University | Prospective Students

this makes me wish i lived in Wyoming :)

Rice accepts 25% straight from Houston. (according to the Dean of Admissions)

Whoa, hold on folks! Here are your stats- scroll half way down. Rice does indeed take an overwhelming majority of kids from Texas. Texas loves Rice. Rice know Texas.

Rice University | Students

yeah, but leebron says hes in the process of getting the percentage of texas kids down to 40 percent

Where at?

More kids in Houston know about Rice, so more under-qualified kids from Houston apply to the school as a reach, which is why the acceptance rate might be lower. I've said before and I'll repeat: Rice doesn't reject qualified applicants, regardless of where they're from.
