I heard a quite a bit of people are getting in UCSB but not UCI. Is it harder to get into UCI? If so than would UCI jump ahead in the rankings and be considered "more prestigious" than UCSB?

well it could be because of the whole budget cut situation…
- There was a slight increase in the amount of applicants to UCI and a 6% decrease in admits (or expected) while there was a 5% decrease and in aplicants to UCSB.
UCI already had a lower admit rate (48.5% 2008) and (UCSB 49.2%)
I know a few people who got into SB but not UCI…

Yes, UCI is harder to get in to than UCSB or UCD. I verifies this on wikkipedia; Irvine is ranked fourth hardest to get in to of all the UC campuses (after UCB, UCLA, and UCSD). I originally found this out through my dad, who is a UC professor. He kept insisting that UCI is better than Davis and Santa Barbara, but I did not believe him until I read it for myself, and then saw the very thing you’re talking about.

^ I say UCSD, UCI, UCD and UCSB are pretty on the same level.
They go neck-to-neck in their fields

in ranks UCSD is way harder than the others…
the others are pretty much same… but UCI is still slightly harder than ucd and sb
I am choosing UCI over UCSD tho. its not all about ranks =D

This year, UCSB had a drop in applications submitted to their campus while facing a 6% enrollment cut. UCI had an increase in applications while facing a 12% enrollment cut.

@ indiowho,
you’re picking UCI over SD? how come?
i don’t know if i should be going to Irvine, so shed some light on your decision please!
thanks :)

My friend’s S picked UCI over UCSD and loves it! He picked it because after visitng both, he just liked it better. Don’t pick for the “prestiege” value of which is harder to get into. Go with your personal instincts and what major you’re interested in.

yeah, that’s the overall msg that i’ve been getting from CC’ers. :)

Well, I even got into my first choice college (warren) for SD but there’s just something I dont like bout sd… I dont know if I “click” with it. Last year I visited and I just didnt dig it, ya know? lol
a few other reasons are:
I dont like the six college system… I think different general ed req for each are whack…
I LOVE ASIANS hahaha we have NONE here… UCI =]
Competitive/boring: There will be too much competition at SD… esp from the LA and Cal rejects that end up going there =/. Boring in that there seems to be a tendency for these kids to compensate for their rejection by doing “better” in college(like they need it -_- most of them are brilliant)
Location: I would rather be in oc… closer to “everything”. LA, big events, concerts, theme parks ect. (I like the drive to better too… cuz I dont have to go over mountains to get there… lol closer to home. slightly…
I know a few people that might go there and a few who already go there.
Expected major will be Psychology and Social Behavior which they dont have at SD… but I dont want to base it on this because I might change my mind…
I fell in love with UCI during the summer when I went to cosmos. I loved the campus. I loved the people. I loved the area. I could actually see myself spending four years there. unlike SD which seemed to be just another campus tour…

Not to offend anyone but I’m white. Will I feel out of place at UCI?

I’m also looking at UCSB as well.

There are a TON of white students at UCI. It’s a nice student body. Everyone there is educated and students seem to mix it up.

^Hows the women? Not that this factor should influence my decision though…

Can’t help you there, except to say my friend’s son met his girlfriend there their first year. They’ve been together 3 years now…

lol I’m Mexican and I didn’t feel out of place.
I think its all just how you handle it. If you going be looking around all time and saying “wow I’m the only _____ person here” then yes but if you just see people as people then I think no. Plus its not like there’s no white people there… isn’t it like 25% white? its only lik 15% Latino/Hispanic… so I think you’ll be fine.

by the way, she’s asian…very, very nice; very, very pretty…very, very smart!

Ho Ho Ho! Expect it to be the same here as well if your major is in either physical or biological sciences, although the people in mathematics seems to be extremely lax except for three or four math majors.

My friend picked UCI over UCSD because of the feel, he just felt UCSD was so close, odd-feeling, and even with diversity the people wouldn’t talk to anyone, he saw the dorm buildings and was turned off by lots of things

I’ve only been to UCSD one time and I just did not like the location nor how the campus is set up
